30th Annual Mayor's Cup
Brown and Providence will meet in a home-and-home series to decide the 30th annual Mayor's Cup, playing a two-game series for the second straight season. Brown will visit Schneider Arena on Thursday, December 10 before hosting the Friars on Sunday, January 3 at Meehan Auditorium. Brown captured the Mayor's Cup series last year when the two teams played twice in the same season for the first time since 1983. The two teams split the home-and-home series after the Friars picked up a 3-2 overtime victory on Friday before the Bears won on the road the next day, 5-3, but Brown won the Mayor's Cup due to goal differential.
Last Time Out
Brown dropped a pair of ECAC games at home last weekend, falling to Princeton, 4-2, and No. 2 Quinnipiac, 3-0. Tyler Bird and Mark Naclerio scored against the Tigers, while Tim Ernst made 22 saves in the loss. Ernst had 10 saves in two periods against the Bobcats, before Tyler Steel came in for seven saves in the third. Michael Garteig had 20 saves to secure the shutout and keep Quinnipiac unbeaten at 15-0-2.
Brown vs. Providence All-Time:
Brown and Providence, Rhode Island's only Division I hockey teams, have met 95 times, with PC leading the all-time series, 47-45-3. On March 1, 1927, Brown defeated the Friars, 4-1, at the Rhode Island Auditorium in the first meeting between Brown and Providence. Providence holds a 16-10-3 lead in the Mayor's Cup series. There have only been seven overtime games in the all-time series, with six of the seven, and the only three ties, coming in Mayor's Cup games. Brown is 2-2-3 in overtime contests against the Friars.
Scouting the Friars
Top ranked Providence College, the reigning NCAA Champions, are unbeaten at 11-0-3 overall and 4-0-2 in Hockey East play. Providence is riding an 18-game unbeaten streak stretching back to last season and ranks sixth nationally in both scoring offense (3.86) and defense (1.86). Defenseman Jake Walman leads the team in scoring (11-8-19), but will be out this Thursday after suffering an injury last weekend. Mark Jankowski ranks second on the team in goals (7) and points (17), while Nick Saracino has a team-best 11 assists. Nick Ellis has been impressive in net, checking in at 10-0-3 with a 1.75 GAA and a .939 save percentage.
Taking on Top Talent
Brown's game at Providence will mark the third top-five opponent in the last four games. Brown previously tied then-No. 4 UMass Lowell, 5-5, on Nov. 28 and fell to then-No. 3 Quinnipiac, 3-0, last weekend.
Marchin Leads ECAC Rookies
Rookie Tommy Marchin leads the ECAC in freshman scoring at 6-7-13. He was named the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month for November and is ranked fourth nationally among rookies in points per game (1.18).
