
Men's Hockey Set to Play Colgate, Lake Superior State at UVM Catamount Cup

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's hockey team will open the second half of the season at the UVM Sheraton/TD Bank Catamount Cup, when the Bears take on Colgate (12/29) and Lake Superior State (12/30) in a pair of non-conference and neutral site contests.

Last Time Out
Brown wrapped up the first half of the season at No. 1 Providence when the Bears fell to the undefeated Friars, 4-1, in game one of the Mayor's Cup series. Brown went 2-7-3 in the first 12 games, going 2-1-3 in between a pair of three-game skids, while playing five games against teams ranked in the top-10 of the current PairWise rankings. Nick Lappin is a two-time ECAC Player of the Week selection and leads the team in goals (7), points (17) and is tied for assists (10). Rookie Tommy Marchin and senior Mark Naclerio have 13 and 11 points, respectively, while rookie defenseman Max Gottlieb has 10 assists.
Brown vs. Colgate All-Time
Brown and Colgate will meet for the third time this season in a non-conference match-up at the Catamount Cup. Brown went 1-0-1 against the Raiders in conference play, including a 5-0 victory in the opening game of the Friendship Four tournament in Belfast. Tommy Marchin recorded his first career hat trick in the contest and Tim Ernst earned the shutout in net. The upcoming matchup will be the 85th meeting between the two teams in a series that began on March 8, 1935, a 1-0 Brown victory. Colgate leads the all-time series, 55-23-6.
Scouting the Raiders
Colgate (5-11-1, 2-6-1) topped Clarkson (2-1) after a loss to St. Lawrence (6-3) in early December to close out the first half of the season. Tyson and Tylor Spink pace the team with 15 and 12 points, respectively, while Mike Borkowski is tied with Tyson for a team-high seven goals. Charlie Finn is 5-11-1 in net with a .891 save percentage and a 3.55 goals-against average. Colgate's power play is ranked fourth in the ECAC at 22.7 percent, but the Raiders are allowing 3.76 goals per game on defense and clock in at 78.9 percent on the penalty kill.
Brown vs. Lake Superior All-Time
When Brown plays Lake Superior State at the Catamount Cup, it will be just the third meeting all-time between the two programs. The series is tied at 1-1-0 and the teams last played during the 1992-93 season when the Bears won, 6-4.
Scouting the Lakers
Lake Superior State (6-10-4, 4-4-4) went last went 0-1-1 in a two-game series against Michigan Tech in early December. Sophomore J.T. Henke leads the team with six goals and 12 points. Gordon Defiel has played a majority of the time in net for a 4-7-3 record with a 2.78 GAA and a .916 save percentage. Nick Koossoff is 2-3-1 with a 1.99 GAA and a .920 save percentage. The Lakers are last in the WCHA is scoring offense at 2.00 goals per game, but rank fourth on both the power play (16.5) and the penalty kill (84.0).
Lappin's Strong Start
Nick Lappin has put together a standout first half of the season, racking up 17 points in 12 games for 1.42 points per game. He is tied for second in the ECAC in scoring, despite six fewer games played than the leader, Sam Anas, who has 19 points.
Marchin Leads ECAC Rookies
Rookie Tommy Marchin is tied for the league lead in freshman scoring at 6-7-13, along with Quinnipiac's Chase Priskie, who has played in six more games. He was named the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month for November and is ranked fifth nationally among rookies in points per game (1.08).
Senior Class Scoring
The four-player senior class of 2016 is responsible for 50 percent of goals and 42 percent of point scoring.
Facing Off
Mark Naclerio is 183-122 on faceoffs for a team best .600 percentage.
