PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team defeated UMass in impressive fashion, 203-95, on Saturday at Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center, in the team's home-opening meet. The Bears swept the 1000-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard breaststroke, 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly.
"This was a great win for the men's program, finishing out the fall dual meet season," said head coach Chris Ip. "We gathered the information needed to prepare for the December Big Al invitational at Princeton. The team demonstrated upper end speed but more exciting was the depth that was exhibited in eight events."
Senior Cory Mayfield (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.), sophomore Grant Casey (North Attleboro, Mass.) and junior Matt Orringer (Ann Arbor, Mich.) completed the first Brown sweep in the 1000-yard freestyle with times of 9:29.16, 9:34.02 and 9:34.30, respectively.
In the 100-yard backstroke, sophomore Willy Lee (Palo Alto, Calif.) paced the Bears with a first place finish (50.71). Freshman Nicholas Brown (Sudbury, Mass.) and junior Nicholas Johnston (Pleasanton, Calif.) were behind him for second and third with marks of 51.67 and 52.49, respectively.
Junior Connor Lohman (Prospect, Ky.) (57.31), freshman Waylon Jin (Berwyn, Pa.) (57.76) and senior Christopher Meyers (Milwaukee, Wis.) (58.92) swept the 100-yard breaststroke.
Sophomore Riley Springman (Orlando, Fla.), sophomore Brendan Woo (Wyckoff, N.J.) and senior Alexander Treil (Needham, Mass.) claimed the top three spots in the 200-yard butterfly, with Springman winning with a time of 1:49.87.
Lohman (2:05.60), Jin (2:06.93) and freshman Carson Christuk (Newbury, Mass.) swam to a top-three finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with times of 2:05.60, 2:06.93 and 2:10.21, respectively.
Next up in the 500-yard freestyle, Mayfield grabbed first place with a time of 4:36.19 while freshman Liam Hollowsky (Naples, Fla.) finished second (4:42.02) and junior Kevin Mertz (Santa Rosa, Calif.) finished third (4:45.67).
Springman recorded the win in the 100-yard butterfly (50.12) and the 400-yard IM (4:07.18).
"Dual meets are a great snapshot of how the team is reacting to our training cycles," said Ip. "We trust this gives our men the confidence to continue developing in the new system."
The Bears return to action to compete at the Big Al Invite, hosted by Princeton, running Friday, Dec. 4 through Sunday, Dec. 6.
