PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Ben Maurey (Downington, Pa.) notched a goal in the 66th minute to cut the lead to one, but the Brown men's soccer team could not find the equalizer down the stretch as the Bears fell to Siena, 2-1, in the season opener Friday night at Stevenson Field.
Brown stands at 0-1 on the season, while the Saints improve to 3-0 overall. Brown outshot the Saints, 20-8, including a 15-5 margin in the second half.
After a scoreless first half, when the two teams combined for eight shots, the visitors jumped on the scoreboard at 48:24 as Alexander Tejera hit the top right corner of the net with a bending shot for the early one-goal lead. Siena tacked on another goal just over two minutes later when Nick Theobold converted a penalty kick to lift the visitors in front, 2-0.
After missing most of last season due to injury, Maurey put the Bears on the board at 65:32 with the team's first tally of the season. Freshman James Myall (St. Charles, Ill.) dribbled down the right side and launched a long pass into the box, where Maurey gained control and tapped the ball into the back corner of the net to pull the Bears within one, 2-1.
Maurey's goal sparked a heavy flurry of Brown shots for the remainder of the contest, including four shots on target during the final 12 minutes of play. Myall enjoyed a solid bid in the 79th minute, as he corralled a throw-in for a blast in front of the box, but Siena keeper Josh Weiss punched away the shot to preserve the lead.
After senior goalkeeper Mitch Kupstas (Suwanee, Ga.) kept the Bears in the game with a diving save, rookie Quinn English (Milwaukee, Wis.) gave the home side one last opportunity to even the score in the 89th minute, but the rookie's shot was denied as the Saints held on for the victory.
Kupstas recorded three saves for the Bears, while Weiss made seven stops in net on the other end. Maurey, junior Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.) and rookie Louis Zingas (Warren, Mich.) paced the Bears with four shots apiece.
Brown returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 7 when they visit Boston University at 7 p.m.
