BOSTON – Junior Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.) scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute to lift the Brown men's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout over No. 23 Boston University in Sunday night's non-conference tilt at Nickerson Field.
Brown moves to 1-1 on the young season, while BU drops to 2-2 overall.
Brown outshot the Terriers by a 10-8 margin in the contest, including a 5-0 edge in the opening 45 minutes, when the Bears put together a dominating defensive performance and held the opposition without a shot in the first half. The Terriers did not record a shot on target in the contest.
Boston University outshot the Bears in the second half, 8-5, but the Bears broke a scoreless tie late in regulation. With five minutes left to play, junior Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.) sent a free kick into the box, where Akeel headed the ball into the back of the net for his first tally of the season.
The Terriers had one more late chance to even the score on a corner kick with less than four minutes remaining, but the home side could not score off the opportunity as the Bears held on for the victory.
Senior keeper Mitch Kupstas (Suwanee, Ga.) earned the win for the Bears, while Nick Thomson made four saves in the loss for the Terriers. Senior Daniel Taylor (Greenwich, Conn.) paced the Bears with three shots in the game.
