HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. – Brown University women's ice hockey alumna Katie Guay '05 will become one of the first female referees to officiate in a professional men's hockey game since the late 1990s, the Southern Professional Hockey League in partnership with USA Hockey announced.
A former captain and team MVP at Brown, Guay will serve as a referee in a game between the Columbus Cottonmouths and Fayetteville FireAntz on Friday. Already an official for ECAC Hockey and Hockey East, Guay earned degrees in Business Economics and Psychology from Brown in 2005.
"We are extremely excited to be allowed the opportunity to showcase two of the top female referees in the world," SPHL Director of Officiating Mark Faucette said.
Guay played in 128 games during her four-year career for the Bears from 2001-05 and totaled 69 points on 29 goals and 40 assists. Along with Erin Blair, she will stand as one of the first female officials in a men's professional game in North America since Heather McDaniel in the late 1990s. Guay will also officiate at the upcoming 2015 IIHF World Championship.
"Katie is a very solid official. She has both my confidence and my best wishes as she helps break the glass ceiling in officiating," ECAC Hockey Director of Officiating Paul Stewart said. "She can skate, has played the game and is recognized by both ECAC Hockey and the IIHF as a more than competent referee."
