Worcester, MA - Holy Cross had four players score in double figures, led by Eric Green's 16 points, and utilized relentless defensive pressure to force 23 Brown turnovers to earn an 80-65 win over Brown at the Hart Center Wednesday evening.
Coming off a win over #25 Harvard, Holy Cross extends its record to 2-0 on the season, while Brown falls to 1-2 overall.
While the Bears used their decided height advantage in the frontcourt to out-rebound Holy Cross by a 32-26 margin, the Crusaders' pesky guards forced 23 turnovers and combined for 15 steals.
Sophomore Leland King led the Bears with a game high 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field. He also pulled down eight rebounds.
Brown junior forward Cedric Kuakumensah returned to his hometown of Worcester, Mass., and had a big game, scoring 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while pulling down eight rebounds. Kuakumensah, Brown's two-time Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, blocked two shots against the Crusaders and established a new Brown record for career blocked shot with 165 blocks.
Green's 16 points came with five steals, and were followed by Taylor Abt, who netted 15 points for the Crusaders. Holy Cross guard Anthony Thompson scored 14 points, handed out seven assists and registered five steals. Malachi Alexander also chipped in with 14 points.
With the score tied, 9-9, at the 13:24 mark of the opening half, Holy Cross used swarming full-court pressure to go on a 9-0 run to pull ahead, 18-9, with 10:35 left on a Malcolm Miller jump shot.
The Crusaders led by as many as 18 points in the opening 20 minutes, 38-20, with 2:15 remaining on a basket by Justin Burrell. A three-point play by Kuakumensah and a late basket by Bears' sophomore Steven Spieth cut the Holy Cross lead to 40-25 at the half.
Brown fell behind by as many as 20 points in the second half, 49-29, but finally figured out how to handle the Holy Cross pressure to mount a strong comeback.
King had eight points in a 16-3 Brown run, and sophomore JR Hobbie connected on a trey with 13:26 remaining to pull to the Bears to within seven points, 52-45. But that was as close as the Bears would get down the stretch.
The Bears tip-off the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational Tournament on Saturday, November 22, traveling to Terre Haute, Indiana to battle the Indiana State Sycamores. Game time is 6:00pm.
