
Leland King's 25 Points Not Enough, Brown Falls to Indiana State, 78-66

Terre Haute, Indiana – Khristian Smith scored 23 points and Devonte Brown added 21 points to lead Indiana State to a 78-66 win over Brown at the Hulman Center in the opening round of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational Saturday evening. Bears' sophomore forward Leland King led all scorers with 25 points, completing the double-double with 12 rebounds.
The Bears, playing their fourth game in the last eight days, dropped their third straight game to fall to 1-3 overall. Indiana State improves to 2-1 for the season.
King's 25 points were two short of his career high and came on 10-of-20 shooting from the field. His 12 rebounds tied his career high and helped the Bears to a 39-33 rebounding advantage over Indiana State.
Brown senior forward Rafael Maia scored all of his 10 points in the second half and grabbed six rebounds. Junior forward Cedric Kuakumensah tossed in eight points, and sophomore Steven Spieth had seven points and a career high seven assists for the Bears.
Smith scored 23 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field and perfect 9-of-9 shooting from the free throw line. Brown connected on 7-of-14 field goals. Brenton Scott also scored in double figures for the Sycamores with 11 points.
Brown held a 23-15 lead at the midway point of the opening half on a trey by King, and led, 23-22, on a King layup with five minutes remaining in the half.
The Sycamores went on a 14-0 run to grab a 36-23 lead with 1:18 remaining following a three-point play by Devonte Brown. King stopped the Indiana State run with a buzzer-beating layup to cut the Sycamores' lead to 36-25 at intermission.
The Bears got back in the game at the outset of the second half, outscoring the Sycamores, 10-2, to trail, 38-25, on a short jump shot by Kuakuensah.
Brown kept clawing at the Sycamores and pulled to within two points, 52-50, on a layup by freshman Jason Massey at the 8:47 mark of the second half.
The Bears trailed by as few as four points late in the game, 65-61, following a Maia three-point play. But Indiana State put the game away with a 7-1 run to grab a 72-62 advantage and put the game out of reach.
Brown continues play in the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational Tournament, traveling to Champaign, Illinois on Monday, November 24 to battle Illinois. Tip-off is 8pm Eastern Standard Time.
