PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's crew returns to the water this weekend when the Bears take part in the 50th anniversary of the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. The event kicks off the fall season for the varsity crews and stands as one of the largest events in the rowing world.
The Head of the Charles is a three-mile race that is rowed along the Charles River in Boston. Crews start racing at the Boston University boathouse in the Charles River Basin and row upstream to the finish line just past Artesani Park on the Allston side of the river. The athletes and coxswains not only have to perform physically and battle the elements, but also must have the speed and skills to navigate through the other crews racing in their event.
Brown will have four men's crew entries over the course of the weekend. The racing kicks off on Saturday, Oct. 18 with the Men's Alumni 8 event at 12:38 a.m., showcasing rowing from some of Bruno's most illustrious alumni rowers. The racing continues with the Men's Club 8+ at 2:07pm, which will have two entries of current student-athletes, plus one entry of alumni. The Brown freshmen will be in the first starting position, having won the event last year. The entry of Brown Alumni will be starting 10th, and the Brown third varsity crew will be in the 17th starting position.
The Championship 8 will take place on Sunday, which is the highest level of competition at the event. This race will not only include top crews from the participating schools, but international crews as well, including some all-star composite boats constructed from the best rowers in the world. The Brown entries will be the Varsity and Second Varsity boats, starting in the 10th and 22nd starting places, respectively. Bruno alumni will also be racing in this event, starting in the 28th position.
