Brown Football Hosts Harvard In Nationally Televised Game Under The Lights

Providence, RI - Brown Stadium will be lit up for the third time ever this Saturday, September, 22, when coach Phil Estes' Brown football team hosts Harvard in a nationally televised game and Ivy League opener for both teams. The Bears and Crimson drew a crowd of over 17,000 two years ago at Brown Stadium and a big crowd is expected once again. Kick-off is 4:30 p.m.
Bears Last Week: Making his first collegiate start, senior quarterback Patrick Donnelly rallied Brown (1-0) from a 21-10 fourth quarter deficit to lead the Bears to a 24-21 non-league victory over Holy Cross at Fitton Field. Donnelly passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, including a 10-yard go-ahead touchdown run with 1:24 remaining.
The Crimson: Harvard (1-0) opened its season with a 28-13 victory over San Diego State, scoring three fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away from the Toreros at Harvard Stadium. Treavor Scales rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Crimson.
Lighting It Up On National Television: Brown hosts Harvard on Saturday in the third ever night game at historic Brown Stadium. NBC Sports Network, with Randy Moss calling the play, Ross Tucker providing the color commentary and Carolyn Manno reporting from the sideline, will televise the game nationally. Temporary lighting will be installed for the Saturday evening match-up against the Crimson. Four banks of Musco lights will illuminate Brown Stadium, with two banks of temporary lights towering above the stadium on either side of the field. Brown hosted Harvard in 2010 in the first night game played at Brown Stadium, drawing a crowd of 17,330, the largest crowd for a sporting event in the State of Rhode Island for 2010. Last year's night game against Rhode Island drew a crowd of over 10,000 fans.
The Brown vs. Harvard Series History - 112th Meeting: Brown and Harvard have met 111 times, dating back to 1893, with the Crimson holding a 79-30-2 series advantage. Last year, Harvard earned a 24-7 win over the Bears in a driving rainstorm at Harvard Stadium. In 2010, Brown grabbed an early 23-0 lead and cruised to a 29-14 Ivy victory over Harvard in the first night game at Brown Stadium. The two teams have split the last four games, with each team winning on its home turf.
Theodhosi Wins Gold Helmet: Senior tailback Spiro Theodhosi (Londonderry, NH) was named the New England Football Writers Gold Helmet Award winner as the top player in New England last week. He ran for 120 yards and had 20 receiving yards in the Bears' 24-21 win over Holy Cross.
Donnelly Leads Bears Over Holy Cross: Senior Patrick Donnelly (Longmeadow, MA) waited patiently for two years to get his first career starting nod against Holy Cross, and responded by throwing for two touchdowns (38 and 2 yards) and running 10 yards for the game winning touchdown. Overall, Donnelly completed 24 of 41 passes for 199 yards against the Crusaders. A passing and running threat, Donnelly saw valuable action in 2010, completing 43 of 81 passes for 411 yards and a touchdown, while running for 114 yards. Donnelly's back-up, sophomore Marcus Fuller (Ashland, OH), has not seen any varsity action.
Video Scoreboard Makes Debut At Brown Stadium: Brown Football will unveil a new LED video display scoreboard on Saturday, featuring Daktronics 15HD pixel spacing, that shows live video and instant replays, scoring information, sponsor advertisements, vivid graphics and colorful animations. Measuring more than 18 feet high by nearly 36 feet wide, the video display will incorporate excellent clarity and contrast of images, and is capable of both showing one large image and of being divided into separate windows to show a variety of information, all with outstanding brightness and wide-angle visibility.

Cruz - Pre-Season All-American: The leader of the Brown defensive unit is senior defensive back and co-captain AJ Cruz (Lake Forest, CA), a preseason All-American choice and a three-time All-Ivy selection, earning first team honors twice. Cruz came up with a big play against Holy Cross, picking off a pass with 56 seconds remaining to stop the Crusaders' final drive. He also made eight tackles, including one for a loss against Holy Cross. One of the most respected players in the Ivy League, Cruz ranked fifth on the Brown team with 60 total tackles and led the Bears with three interceptions, second best in the Ivy League. A terrific kick returner, Cruz ranked fourth in the nation and led the Ivy League in kick-off returns, averaging 31.15 yards per return. He also ran back a kick-off 83 yards for a touchdown against Dartmouth.
D-Line: Senior tackle and co-captain Ross Walthall (Carmel, IN) headlines the defensive line after making 20 tackles a year ago. An aggressive pass rusher, Walthall registered two tackles for a loss and a quarterback sack in 2011. He had a big game in Brown's shutout of Princeton with six tackles. Senior end Luke Miller (Brwyn Mawr, PA) saw action in all 10 games, making seven tackles, including two for a loss and a quarterback sack. Senior tackle Patxi Colbern (Anchorage, AK) is also a strong force in the middle for the Bears. He made13 tackles, including two for a loss last season. Senior tackle Stephen Fox (Winter Haven, FL) was also in the rotation a year ago, making nine tackles, including two for a loss. Junior end Michael Yules (South Dartmouth, MA) ranked third on the Brown team with 6.5 tackles for a loss and will anchor one of the defensive ends positions.
All-Ivy Returnees: Senior AJ Cruz (first team), senior tailback Mark Kachmer (honorable mention) and senior offensive tackle Jack Templeton (first team) are Brown's three All-Ivy returnees.
Lundevall/Fay Lead Brown Wide-Outs: Brown's leading receiver from 2011, senior Tellef Lundevall (Highland Park, IL), returns to the lineup after making a team high 51 catches for 516 yards. He led the Bears with seven catches for 74 yards and a 38-yard touchdown against Holy Cross. Lundevall has tremendous athleticism (he also plays basketball for Brown), with exceptional jumping ability. He caught four touchdown passes last year and also completed a 24-yard pass for a touchdown against Princeton. Senior Jonah Fay (Brookline, MA) excelled on the gridiron a year ago, making 19 catches for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Fay caught a 2-yard touchdown pass vs. Holy Cross and made six receptions for 41 yards.
Kachmer At Tailback: The Bears' rushing attack is led by senior Mark Kachmer (Wheaton, IL), a two-time All-Ivy tailback, who led the Bears in rushing with 569 yards on 126 carries. Kachmer has run for 1,137 career yards heading into the 2012 season. He was named the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for a career high 192 yards against Yale, including a Brown and Yale Bowl record 95-yard run for a touchdown, the fourth longest run in Ivy football history. He accounted for all 99 yards in Brown's NCAA record 99-yard scoring drive. His 95-yard run bested the previous Brown rushing mark of 94 yards by Bob Flanders '71, also against Yale in 1968. He also ran for 97 yards vs. Harvard.
Brown Head Coach Phil Estes: 15th-year head coach Phil Estes, the 19th head coach and second winningest coach in Brown football history, has brought the Brown football program to an unprecedented level of success, winning three Ivy League Championships (1999, 2005 and 2008), including Brown's first ever outright Ivy title in 2005. He helped guide Brown's Class of 2009 to two Ivy League titles, the first class in Brown football history to win two Ivy Championships. Estes' Brown teams have also finished second four times and third four times, while compiling an impressive 84-54 overall mark (.610) in 14 seasons. He has also coached and recruited Brown's only four Ivy Players of the Year: Sean Morey '99, James Perry '00, Nick Hartigan '06 and Buddy Farnham '10. A former offensive coordinator at the University of New Hampshire, Estes was also the Bears' recruiting coordinator for four years (1994-1997) and coached the running backs for three years.

Bears In The NFL: Brown has three of its former players on NFL rosters in 2012. Zak DeOssie '07 is a two-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time Super Bowl Champion for the New York Giants. Colin Cloherty '09 is a tight end for the Jacksonville Jaguars, while fullback James Develin '10 is on the New England Patriots practice squad.
Offensive Front: Senior offensive tackle Jack Templeton (Ramsey, NJ), a first team All-Ivy selection, is the lone returning starter on the Bears' offensive line. He took every snap at left tackle and played a key role in the Bears' offense that averaged 364.5 yards of total offense and posted 23.6 points per game. The Brown offensive line allowed just 13 sacks for the season. Senior Nate Bernstein (Charlotte, NC) was Brown's starting right tackle a year ago and will transition to left guard. Senior Cole Hooper (Oklahoma City, OK) is also experienced after taking 300 snaps at right tackle a year ago. Senior Matt Miller (Villa Hills, KY) will take over at center and junior Dan Austin (Franklin, TN) has earned a starting role at right guard.
Freshmen Travel: Brown had five freshmen travel to its opening game at Holy Cross – defensive tackle Ludovic Richardson (Killingworth, CT), kicker Grant Senne (Winter Park, FL), inside linebacker Chad Berry (East Lyme, CT), defensive back Michael Walsh (Swampscott, MA) and offensive lineman Andrew vanderWilden (Concord, MA). Senne kicked-off for the Bears, Richardson made a tackle for a loss, while Berry made two tackles.
Welcome Back Theo: After missing the 2010 and 2011 seasons following injuries, senior Spiro Theodhosi (Londonderry, NH) made the comeback of his life by rushing for 120 yards on 20 carries in Brown's win over Holy Cross. Theodhosi ran for 103 of his 120 yards in the second half against the Crusaders. Theodhosi, who will be making a bid for the Ivy League's Comeback Player of the Year, is a talented tailback, who ranked second on the 2009 team in rushing with 423 yards on 82 carries. He ran 25 times for a Brown season-best 167 yards and a touchdown against Yale, and rushed 33 times for 138 yards and another touchdown against Dartmouth.
Norocea Gets His Kicks: The Brown kicking game is in the capable hands of junior All-Ivy kicker Alex Norocea (Hermosa Beach, CA), the Ivy League's kick-scoring leader in 2010 with 7.1 points per game. Norocea, who booted a 24 yard field goal vs. Holy Cross, has connected on 23 of 35 career field goals for the Bears. His 15 field goals as a freshman were second best in Brown football history, and seventh in the Ivy League record book, while his 71 kick-scoring points rank 15th in Ivy history. Additionally, Norocea's 12 field goals in Ivy games in 2010 are second best in Ivy history.
New Faces At Inside Linebacker/Safety: Senior Stephen Zambetti (Germantown, TN) is the Bears' top returning inside linebacker after making 20 tackles last season. He led the Bears with 12 tackles, including 8 solo hits, vs. Holy Cross. Also on the inside is sophomore Dan Giovacchini (Acton, MA), who played mostly special teams as a freshman. Senior safety Anthony Franciosi (Easton, MA) saw action in all 10 games in 2011, and opened the 2012 season with five tackles against Holy Cross. Junior Ade Oyalowo (Bowie, MD) earned a start at outside linebacker and responded with six solo tackles vs. Holy Cross. Senior outside linebacker Reed Watne (Los Angeles, CA) stepped up against Holy Cross with nine solo tackles.
Three Rings: Three members of the Brown coaching staff – head coach Phil Estes, assistant head coach Abbott Burrell and offensive coordinator Frank Sheehan – have earned three Ivy League Championship rings (1999, 2005, 2008) coaching the Bears.

Game 1: Brown at Holy Cross, September 15, 2012 Worcester, MA
Making his first collegiate start, senior quarterback Patrick Donnelly rallied Brown from a 21-10 fourth quarter deficit to lead the Bears to a 24-21 non-league victory over Holy Cross in the season opener of Brown's 135th year of intercollegiate football.
"When it came down to crunch time and the game was on the line, Patrick Donnelly really came through," said Brown football coach Phil Estes. "We settled down in the last 30 minutes after struggling in the first half. This is a great come-from-behind win for our team."
Trailing 21-10 early in the fourth quarter, Donnelly cut the Crusader lead to 21-17, when he connected on a two-yard touchdown pass to senior Jonah Fay to cap a 75-yard scoring drive at the 10:17 mark.
Following a defensive stop, Brown took over at its own 16-yard line with over seven minutes remaining in the game.
Donnelly directed a 13 play, 84 yard scoring drive behind the running of senior tailback Spiro Theodhosi, who accounted for 53 yards in the drive. Theodhosi, who finished with a game high 120 yards on the ground, missed the last two years due to injury after a stellar sophomore season.
Donnelly scored the game-winning touchdown on a 10-yard run, giving the Bears a 24-21 lead with just 1:24 left on the clock.
Brown All-American corner back AJ Cruz iced the game for the Bears with an interception on the Crusaders' last possession, giving the ball back to Brown with 56 seconds remaining.
"I can't say enough about Spiro Theodhosi, who had most of our yards on that final drive and made a key first down at the end of the game to put it away," added Estes. "He provided our offense with a shot in the arm."
Donnelly completed 24 of 41 passes for 199 yards, including touchdown passes of 38 and 2 yards. Senior wide receiver Tellef Lundevall made 7 catches for a game high 74 yards, while senior Mark Kachmer and Fay made six catches each.
Overall, Brown's defensive effort was led by senior linebacker Stephen Zambetti, who made 12 tackles, including eight solo stops. Senior linebacker Reed Watne also came through with nine solo tackles.
Holy Cross senior quarterback Kevin Watson racked up a bunch of yards for the Crusaders, throwing for 223 yards, while completing 26 of 40 passes. Eddie Houghton led the Holy Cross ground game with 62 yards.
After a scoreless first quarter, Brown got on the scoreboard first when Alex Norocea connected on a 24-yard field goal with 13:08 left in the second quarter, giving the Bears a 3-0 advantage.
Holy Cross answered on its next possession, marching 79 yards on 14 plays with Watson diving into the end zone from one yard out to give the Crusaders a 7-3 lead at the 7:52 mark of the second quarter.
The Crusaders scored on their first possession of the second half to pull ahead by a 14-3 margin with 9:33 left in the third quarter when Alex Schneider caught a 6-yard Watson touchdown pass.
Donnelly got the Bears back in the game when he spotted Lundevall wide open down the sideline, tossing a 38-yard scoring pass with 4:02 left in the third quarter to pull the Bears to within 14-10 of the Crusaders.
Holy Cross extended its lead to 21-10 with an 83 yard scoring drive at the end of the third quarter, with Eddie Houghton running into the end zone from one yard out.
