This Weekend: Brown will close out the 2011-12 regular season at Quinnipiac and Princeton, looking to snap an eight game (0-7-1) winless skid. The Bears, who have not won since a 3-2 victory over Union on January 21st, are assured of a road series for the first round of the ECAC Tournament, as they can finish no higher than 10th place. More important than positioning, however, is gaining some momentum prior to the First Round.
Last Time Out: The Bears snapped a six-game losing streak with a 3-3 tie with Harvard on Friday night, but saw their winless skid increase to eight games after falling to Dartmouth, 4-1, on Saturday. Against the Crimson, Brown was led by senior Jack Maclellan, who scored his team-leading 15th goal of the year and also assisted the game-tying goal with 1:46 left in regulation for his 100th career point. Sophomore Dennis Robertson also had two points with a pair of assists, while senior Jarred Smith and freshman Massimo Lamacchia were the other two goal scorers. In Saturday's loss to the Big Green, Brown played with just 10 forwards for 50 minutes, as sophomore Mark Hourihan was called for a 10 minute game misconduct early in the first period and then Maclellan went down with an injury just past the 10-minute mark. Freshman Matt Harlow scored the Bears' lone goal, finishing off a three-on-two with classmate Matt Lorito and sophomore Garnet Hathaway. Senior Mike Clemente played both games in net and stopped 26 shots against Harvard and 23 against Dartmouth.
Brown vs. Quinnipiac: Brown and Quinnipiac met four times in 2010-11, playing to a pair of ties during the regular season (3-3 in Providence & 2-2 in Hamden), before the Bobcats posted a pair of 4-0 wins in the first round of the ECAC Hockey playoffs. Quinnipiac improved to 10-4-3 all-time against the Bears after the two teams played to a 2-2 tie in Providence in early January. Prior to the pair of ties last season, the two teams had split the regular season series in each of the previous two seasons. Sophomore Dennis Robertson is Brown's statistical leader against Quinnipiac with three goals in five games, while senior Jack Maclellan (1g, 2a, 6 games) and junior Chris Zaires (3a, 7 games) also have three career points against the Bobcats.
Scouting Quinnipiac: The Bobcats are 16-11-5 on the season and still in position to earn a bye for the ECAC Hockey playoffs, as they sit just two points behind fourth-place Clarkson. Quinnipiac is coming off a 5-2 loss at Union, as the Bobcats split on the road last weekend after defeating RPI, 3-1, on Friday. Quinnipiac is led by sophomore Connor Jones, who has 31 points (7g, 24a) in 29 games, including a team-high 24 assists. Junior Jeremy Langlois (16g, 9a), and sophomore Kellen Jones (10g, 15a) are tied for second on the team with 25 points each, while Langlois leads the team with 16 goals and shares the team lead with junior Zack Currie with six power play goals. Junior Loren Barron and Currie share the team lead with three game-winning goals. Junior Eric Hartzell has played the majority of time in net for Quinnipiac and has earned a 2.17 GAA with an .910 save percentage in 23 games (9-8-5). Senior Dan Clarke has appeared in 12 games (7-3-0) and has a 2.50 GAA and a .899 save percentage.
Brown vs. Princeton: This weekend will mark the 155th meeting all-time, and the third meeting this season, between Brown and Princeton as the Bears will face the Tigers three times during the regular season for the fourth year in a row. Brown holds an 81-65-8 advantage over Princeton in the all-time series, which dates back to a 4-4 tie during the 1899-1900 season. The two teams split the first two games with Brown earning a 3-2 win in a non-league game and Princeton earning a 3-2 victory in overtime in the first ECAC Hockey contest. The Tigers had recently won eight straight games over Brown, starting with a 4-3 win in the 2007 playoffs, before Brown snapped the winning streak with a 3-1 victory in Providence on December 4, 2009. Under head coach Brendan Whittet, Brown has a 3-4-0 record over Princeton. Senior Jack Maclellan is Brown's statistical leader against the Tigers with 10 points (5g, 5a) in 11 career games, while sophomore Garnet Hathaway (1g, 3a) and junior Chris Zaires (4a) each have four points in four and eight games, respectively.
Scouting Princeton: The Tigers enter Friday's game against Yale following a 6-2 win over RPI on Saturday evening, as Princeton split the weekend with Union (L, 3-0) and the Engineers. Saturday's victory snapped a three-game skid for the Tigers, who were swept by Clarkson (3-2) and St. Lawrence (4-1) the weekend before. Princeton is led by sophomore Andrew Calof, who has 23 points (11g, 12a) in 27 games, while sophomore Jack Berger also has at least 20 points (9g, 11a) in 27 games. Berger also leads the team with four power play goals, while Calof has a team-high three game-winning goals. Five other players have posted double digits in scoring, while an additional 17 have earned at least one point. Sophomore Sean Bonar and junior Mike Condon have more-or-less split time in net, with Bonar earning a 3.02 GAA and a .898 save percentage in 15 games (4-8-3), and Condon posting a 2.79 GAA and a .921 save percentage in 13 games (4-5-3).
