Former Brown hockey standout Aaron Volpatti '10 (Revelstoke, BC), who appeared in 15 NHL games in his first full professional season in 2010-11, is on the Vancouver Canucks opening day roster. The Canucks are scheduled to open up the 2011-12 season tonight, Thursday, October 6, at home against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Volpatti is one of five recent men's hockey alumni currently in either the NHL or AHL.
"It is exciting to see the sheer number of former Brown Bear Hockey Players that dot the professional landscape as we enter the 2011-2012 season," said Brown head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "They are all great ambassadors of Brown University and I take great pride in the fact that they wore the Brown jersey. They are always part of the rich tradition and history of Brown Hockey and I look forward to seeing these former Bears donning an NHL uniform."
2010-11 captain Harry Zolnierczyk '11 (Toronto, ONT), who signed a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers at the conclusion of the season, narrowly missed making the Flyers' opening day roster as he was one of the last remaining players in the Flyers training camp to get sent to the AHL.
Yann Danis '04 and Ryan Garbutt '09, who signed one-year two-way NHL contracts in the offseason with Edmonton and Dallas, respectively have been sent to their clubs AHL affiliates, the Oklahoma City Barons (Danis) and the Texas Stars (Garbutt).
In addition, Scott Ford '04, who has been exclusively in the AHL since the 2008-09 season will start the 2011-12 campaign with the Milwaukee Admirals, his fourth year with the team.
