Despite playing the third-ranked team in the nation on Saturday
afternoon, the Bears (2-14-4, 0-11-3 ECAC) remained undaunted,
coming up just short in a 3-0 loss to #3 Clarkson (17-5-3, 11-1-1
ECAC) that was closer than the final score indicated. Brown
came out playing well, outshooting the Golden Knights 13-7 in the
first period, but Clarkson was able to pick up an early goal, and
held on from there for the 3-0 victory despite 35 saves from rookie
goalie Katie Jamieson.
Bruno came out with some confidence after nearly knocking off Saint
Lawrence on Friday evening, and moved the puck well over the first
20 minutes. Senior Sasha Van Muyen led the early charge,
notching three first period shots and keeping steady pressure on
Clarkson keeper Lauren Dahm. However, the Golden Knights
snuck one by Jamieson just two and a half minutes into the game,
stealing the early momentum.
The second period was marked by impressive defense and play in net
from both sides, as the goalies combined to stop all 27 shots
taken. Jamieson was particularly impressive, making 19 stops,
and helping the Bears shut down a Clarkson five-on-three
opportunity. After back-to-back penalties on Brown gave the
visitors a two-man advantage for more than a minute, it appeared
that Clarkson was on the verge of a 2-0 lead. Jamieson and
the Brown penalty kill rose to the occasion though, snuffing out
the scoring chance.
The third began in much the same fashion, with both sides
exchanging shots but unable to find the net. However, just
over five minutes into the frame, the Golden Knights were able to
corral a rebound and put it back on target for another goal, and a
2-0 lead. Jamieson made several tremendous saves during the
remainder of the period, including a diving, sprawling stop to keep
the Bears in the game with nine minutes left. The Knights
then added a final tally with three minutes to play, intercepting a
pass and knocking it into net for the final 3-0 margin.
The Bears will be back in action on Saturday, January 30, when they
kick off a home-and-home with Yale by traveling to New Haven to
play the Bulldogs at 2:00 p.m.
