
American Holds Off Brown, 76-68

Providence, Rhode Island - Junior Nick Hendra scored 18 points
and junior Vlad Moldoveanu added 15 points to lead American to a
74-68 non-league win over Brown at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The
loss drops Brown to 5-9 overall, while American moves to 3-11.
Brown junior Peter Sullivan led all scorers with 19 points, and
completed his first career double-double with a game high 11
rebounds. Sullivan connected on 9 of 9 free throws and 5 of 9 field
goals.
After trailing by as many as 12 points in the second half, Brown
mounted a furious comeback late in the game to cut the American
lead to three points, 68-65, on a three-point basket by Garrett Leffelman with 1:21 left to play. But the Eagles grabbed control
down the stretch with a 6-0 run as the Bears ran out of gas, to
pull ahead, 74-65, on two free throws by Matt Wilson with nine
seconds remaining.
American jumped out to an early 17-11 lead by connecting on 5 of
their first six three-point field goals. The Eagles led by as many
as nine points in the first half, 39-30, on a lay-up by Moldoveanu
with 44 seconds left in the half. Two free throw by Brown's
Sullivan cut the Eagles' lead to 39-32 at intermission.
The Eagles opened the second half with a 7-2 run to grab its
biggest lead, 46-34, on a jump shot by Riley Grafft with 16:05 left
in the game.
The difference in the game came at the three-point arc, where the
Eagles hit 9 of 17 attempts, while the Bears were held to 6 of 22
shooting.
Brown senior center Matt Mullery added 15 points and seven
rebounds, connecting on 9 of 10 free throws. Leffelman also scored
in double figures for the Bears with 10 points.
Hendra's 18 points came on a mix of treys and two-point field
goals. He made 4 of 8 treys for the game. The Bears held
Moldoveanu, a transfer from George Mason, to 15 points, just one in
the second half, before fouling out. Stephen Lumpkins recorded a
double-double for the Eagles with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bears are back in action again at home on Monday, January 4,
facing Wagner College. Game time is 7:00 pm at the Pizzitola Sports
Center.
