Men’s Basketball Head Coaching Chair Mike Martin ‘04 Accepts Position at Michigan

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Samuel M. Mencoff Vice President for Athletics and Recreation M. Grace Calhoun '92 announced today that Men's Basketball Head Coaching Chair Mike Martin '04 has accepted a position at the University of Michigan after 14 years leading the Bears.
"This is a bittersweet moment for us and for me," Calhoun said. "Mike Martin has been an institution here at Brown. We are so grateful for his leadership as our head coach, on our campus, and in our community. He has been the ultimate ambassador for our program and for our University. While he will be profoundly missed on College Hill, we are absolutely delighted for Mike, Kristin, and their family to have this opportunity."
Named Brown's head coach in 2012 at just 29 years old, Martin was the fourth-youngest head coach in Division I men's basketball at the time. He departs his alma mater as the winningest coach in program history with 171 victories.
"Brown has changed my life," Martin said. "The relationships we've built here — with our players, staff, alumni, and the broader community — are so meaningful to my family. As a proud Brown alumnus, I'm deeply grateful for the opportunity to have led this program for the past 14 years and to have worked alongside so many remarkable young men. Brown will always hold a special place in my heart."
Under Martin's 13-season tenure, four Bears have been named First Team All-Ivy League. The Bears have also had five Ivy League Defensive Players of the Year under Martin.
In 2018-19, Martin was named Ivy League Coach of the Year after guiding Brown to its first 20-win season in program history and a berth in the College Basketball Invitational, where the Bears posted their first-ever postseason win with a victory over Alabama-Birmingham.
Martin guided the Bears to the Ivy League Championship Game during the 2023-24 season, with a victory over Princeton in the semifinals. The Bears closed that regular season with six-straight victories.
A four-year starter at Brown, Martin was part of the winningest classes in the Bears' basketball history, posting a 63-45 four-year record from 2000-04. He also helped the class of 2004 to a school-record Ivy League record of 39-17, the best by an Ivy League team other than Penn and Princeton since 1970. The Bears had four consecutive winning seasons with Martin on the roster, highlighted by an NIT appearance in 2003, he concluded his career ranked third in program history in three-point field goals (143), ninth in steals (113), and 10th in assists (232).
"I will always be Ever True to this program and to the people who make it special," Martin said. "I'm especially grateful to Grace Calhoun for her leadership and belief in our program, and to President Paxson and the Corporation for their continued support of Brown Basketball. Their commitment to doing things the right way has meant a great deal to me and my family."
Associate Head Coach Tyson Wheeler will lead the men's basketball program in the interim.
