1/16/2010 12:00:00 AM | Men's Ice Hockey
This Weekend: The Bears face Yale in their only
game this week and will wrap up the regular-season series with the
Bulldogs looking for their first win over Yale in 11 tries. Brown's
only win over Yale with the current class of seniors came during
their freshman season; a 3-2 overtime win in December of 2006.
Since then, Yale has reeled off 10 straight wins, including a 6-5
overtime victory earlier this season.
Last Time Out: Brown dropped a 9-4 decision to
Dartmouth last Friday, in the first meeting between the two schools
this season. The Big Green got out to a 3-0 first-period lead and
extended that lead to 4-0 before junior Harry Zolnierczyk got the
Bears on the board. Another Dartmouth goal made it 5-1 at the end
of two periods, but freshman Marc Senecal scored Brown's second of
the night 11 seconds into the third for a 5-2 score. The two teams
combined for three more goals over the next three-and-a-half
minutes, with Dartmouth answering every Brown score with a goal of
its own. After the Big Green held an 8-3 lead with 5:46 remaining,
Zolnierczyk scored his second of the night and first career power
play goal to cut the lead in half. Dartmouth would add its own
power play marker with 2:09 left for the 9-4 final. Sophomore
Jack
Maclellan also scored in the loss, while sophomore Mike Clemente
(17) and senior Dan Rosen (14) combined for 31 saves.
Coming Up: Brown closes out a stretch of six
straight road games next weekend with a trip to the North Country
on January 22nd and 23rd. The games at Clarkson and St. Lawrence
also mark the return of regular weekend (Friday-Saturday) games for
the Bears, who will have played just a single game in the two
weekends prior to the trip . Following the trip to the North
Country, Brown
returns home for a pair of League games against RPI and Union on
January 29th and 30th, its first home games since December 8th.
This Date Historically Speaking: All-time, Brown
is 5-7-1 in games played on January 16th. The Bears are 2-6-0 in
away games and 3-1-1 in home games played on this date. In
addition, Brown is 0-2-0 against Yale in games played on January
16th, falling 3-2 (ot) in 1954 and 10-1 in 1929.
Brown vs. Yale: Yale leads the all-time series
with Brown, which dates back to the 1897-1898 season, by an 86-69-8
margin, including five straight wins last year and 10 straight wins
dating back to December 9, 2006 when Brown earned a 3-2 overtime
win. Senior Jordan Pietrus is Brown's statistical leader against
the Bulldogs with 7 points (3g, 4a) in 10 career games, while
senior Devin Timberlake (2g, 2a) and junior Harry Zolnierczyk (2g,
2a) both have four points in eight career games.
Scouting Yale: The Bulldogs are 2-1-1 in 2010 and
enter Saturday night's game following Tuesday night's 3-2 loss at
Harvard. Yale opened the year with a 6-1 victory over Ferris State
in the first round of the Badger Showdown and then tied host
Wisconsin, 2-2, in the Championship game. A 4-2 victory over
Dartmouth last Sunday stretched Yale's unbeaten streak to 5 games
(4-0-1), dating back to a 7-4 win over Quinnipiac on December 4th.
The streak was snapped in Tuesday's loss to the Crimson, which saw
Harvard score three second-period goals to erase a 1-0 deficit.
Yale is led by sophomore Brian O'Neill, who has 20 points (8g, 12a)
in 16 games, while junior Broc Little (12g, 6a) and senior Sean
Backman (11g, 7a) both have 18 points in 16 games. Senior Thomas
Dignard (4g, 13a), freshman Andrew Miller (16g, 3a), senior Mark
Arcobello (5g, 9a), and junior Denny Kearney (5g, 9a) have all also
reached double digits in scoring. Yale goaltending duties have
mostly been split between three goalies with freshmen Nick Maricic
(373:59) and Jeff Malcom (358:32) seeing the majority of the time.
Maricic leads the Bulldogs with a .909 save percentage, while
Malcom leads the team with a 2.18 GAA.
