
Balanced Attack Leads Brown Past Yale in Ivy League Opener

Providence, RI- Aileen Daniels led three Brown players in
double-digit scoring with 15 points and five rebounds to help the
Bears (4-11, 1-0 Ivy) to a thrilling 60-56 victory against Yale
(5-9, 0-1 Ivy) in its 2009-10 Ivy League opener at the Pizzitola
Sports Center Friday evening.
Despite a 7-0 deficit in the first six minutes of the game, the
Bears fought back with a basket from Daniels and seven consecutive
points from Lindsay Nickel to even the score 9-9 with 10:56
remaining in the half. The Bears and Bulldogs traded baskets, as
the Bears continued to stay within striking distance with solid
defense and limiting Yale to just one shot as the Bears
out-rebounded the Bulldogs 27-23 in the first stanza.
Yale extended its lead to 18-15 with 5:42 left in the first, but
sophomore Lindsay Steele put in nailed a jumper to cut the Bears
deficit to one. The teams continued to trade baskets and Yale
gained a 25-23 advantage with 57 seconds left, and went on to gain
a four-point lead after a layup from junior Mady Gobrecht. But
Brown's Sheila Dixon came right back down the court with a
layup to put Brown within two, to head into the locker room at the
half trailing 27-25.
Yale jumped out to a seven point lead to begin the second half, but
the Bears buckled down and came back to take its first lead of the
night, 39-37, after a jumper by Aileen Daniels with 11:40 on the
clock.
Brown extended its lead to four after two free throws by Daniels,
but Yale's Haywood Wright made a lay-up to cut the deficit
back to two. Yoyo Greenfield tied the game at 41 with 10:13 on the
clock with a lay-up, but Hannah Passafuime drove to the hoop to
give the lead back to Brown at the 8:27 mark.
A jump shot by Lindsay Nickel boosted Brown's advantage to
three, 47-44, at the 6:07 mark, but a free throw by Allie Messimer
brought the Bulldogs back within two. Yale hit back-to-back buckets
to gain a 50-48 lead with 4:41 remaining, but an intentional foul
by Yale's Melissa Colborne put junior forward Sarah Delk at
the line to make both to tie the game for the fifth time.
Sheila Dixon made a lay-up and the Bears made a big stop on the
other end of the floor as Delk grabbed the rebound and passed the
ball down the floor to Dixon who hit a jumper to give Bruno a
four-point lead with 3:33 left in the game. Delk hit two more free
throws to gain its biggest lead of the evening, 56-50, as Brown
never looked back and handled Yale's defensive pressure to
secure a 60-56 win.
Aileen Daniels paced the Brown offense with 15 points and five
rebounds, followed by Lindsay Nickel with 11 and Hannah Passafuime
added 10. Natalie Bonds had another big night on the boards for
Bruno, as she pulled down 10 rebounds and added three points in
tonight's contest. Leading the Bulldogs was Mady Gobrecht
with 15 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Yoyo Greenfield with 13
points.
The Bears ended the night shooting 36 percent from the field, as
Yale finished 30 percent. Brown went 12-of-20 from the free-throw
line and grabbed 42 rebounds this evening, and Yale went 18-of-25
from the line and pulled down 52 boards.
The Bears are back in action on Friday, Jan. 22 when it battles
Yale in New Haven at 7:00 p.m.
