Adrianna Johnson, a Providence, Rhode Island native, established her coaching career at Brown University as a volunteer intern with Strength & Conditioning in the Fall of 2015 under the current Director of Sports Performance, Brandon O’Neall. As an intern, Johnson received responsibility over the Women’s Golf and Equestrian programs in Spring of 2016 when she acquired her Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
Before her time in 2015 at Brown, Johnson served as a volunteer coach at Providence College and Conca Sport and Fitness in West Springfield, Massachusetts. In both positions, Johnson aided in implementation of programs and daily upkeep of facilities.
After her volunteering stint with Brown, Johnson accepted an Assistant Athletic Performance Coach position at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in Pembroke, North Carolina in May 2016. During her one year at UNCP, Johnson designed and implemented strength and conditioning programs for Women’s Soccer, Volleyball, Women’s Golf, Women’s Swim and Dive and Spirit Squad and helped with other teams as needed including Football. Johnson helped Women’s Soccer go on to achieve a 12-4-2 record and win the Peach Belt Conference Championship.
Following her time with UNCP, Johnson returned to Brown in 2017 as a Strength & Conditioning Assistant Coach working with Women’s Basketball, Men’s Crew, Women’s Rugby, Equestrian, Men’s and Women’s Squash, Men’s and Women’s Fencing and Men’s Golf. During her time in this role, Johnson graduated from California University of Pennsylvania (currently PennWest California) with a Masters of Science in Exercise Science and Health Promotion in May 2018. Johnson achieved her Strength and Conditioning Coach certification (SCCC) through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa). In Fall 2019, Johnson was elevated to Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach and soon after in Spring 2020 assumed the role of Internship Coordinator. Johnson currently has the position of Associate Head Sports Performance - Olympic Sports designing and implementing programs for Women’s Basketball, Men’s Crew, Women’s Rugby, and Women’s Tennis.
Within the field, Johnson is passionate about strengthening the minority strength and conditioning coaches network and promoting exposure. In addition to her coaching responsibilities, Johnson plays in Rhode Island’s all-inclusive LGBTQ+ Flag football league that prides itself on building a better LGBTQ+ community and volunteering.
Johnson and her wife, Sarah reside in Rhode Island, with their cats, Gracie, Judy and Daisy.
