A former standout student-athlete at the University of Kentucky, Alex Hyland spent four seasons as an assistant coach and choreographer for the Brown University gymnastics program from 2020-2023.
Hyland was voted the 2023 USA Gymnastics Co-Women's Assistant Coach of the Year, along with fellow Brown assistant, Jay Villegas. Hyland provided choreography and coaching to Julia Bedell who was the 2023 USAG Collegiate national champion on floor, GEC Co-Specialist of the Year, and also broke the program's floor record, which had previously been held by Olympian Alicia Sacramone. Under Hyland's guidance, Brown gymnasts achieved a total of five USAG First Team All-America honors, 19 All-GEC honors and eight All-Ivy honors, while capturing the program's fifth Ivy Classic title. In the classroom, the Bears posted the highest team GPA in the nation and had 19 student-athletes earn Scholastic All-America honors from the WCGA.
In 2022, Brown finished runner-up at the inaugural GEC Championships, while earning eight All-GEC honors. In addition, the team earned eight USAG All-American honors while qualifying for the team finals at USAG Nationals for just the third time in program history. Senior Mei Li Costa qualified for NCAA Regionals on bars, and Brown gymnasts combined for four All-Ivy awards.
In 2020, Hyland’s gymnasts totaled nine All-Ivy Classic awards and six All-ECAC accolades alongside two ECAC Scholar-Athletes of the Year, one USAG All-American, six ECAC All-Academic Team selections, and 10 USAG Scholar-Athlete honorees.
Â
Hyland came to College Hill after a sensational four-year career at Kentucky. She became just the second athlete in Wildcats’ history to make four consecutive NCAA national championship appearances, while also earning CoSIDA Academic All-America honors as a senior.
Â
In her final season at Kentucky, Hyland earned WCGA All-America honors on both beam and the all-around, gained All-SEC honors on beam, and garnered SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades. She finished the 2019 regular season as the nation’s No. 16 all-around performer.
Â
During her time with the Wildcats, she captured All-SEC honors in all four seasons and won the 2017 SEC beam title. As a freshman, she claimed a spot on the 2016 SEC All-Freshman Team.
In addition to Brown, Hyland has coached gymnasts Levels 2-10 at several gymnastics clubs, and previously served as a coach at Prestige Fitness and Gymnastics Center in Swansea, Massachusetts, as well as a choreographer for floor and beam routines at club gyms in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. She also served as an assistant coach Mansfield (Mass.) High School in 2021.
Â
A native of Foxborough, Mass., Hyland graduated summa cum laude from Kentucky in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology.
