Karavin Dew, a former assistant coach at Mercer University and a standout student-athlete at Western Kentucky University, enters her third season as an assistant coach with the Brown University softball program in 2020-21 after joining the Bears in October 2018.
In 2019, Dew coached a pair of All-Ivy selections in Lauren Innerst ’22 and Cat Seitz ’19 while Meghan Wimmer ’19 won Brown’s Arlene Gorton ’52 Cup, given to the female varsity athlete who most consistently displays the ideals of sportsmanship and fair play. The Bears’ 2020 season was shortened to 10 games due to novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
Dew has held coaching positions at Mercer and Brevard College at the collegiate level as well as coaching at the high school and travel levels after finishing a four-year career at Western Kentucky from 2010-13.
Prior to Brown, Dew served as a volunteer assistant coach at Mercer during the 2017-18 academic year, working with the team’s catchers, video analysis, and scouting. She acted as an assistant coach at Brevard College during the 2016-17 year, holding responsibilities that included administrative, financial, game planning, recruiting, and academic matters.
Before moving to the college ranks, Dew served as an assistant coach at Dalton High School (2015) and Cass High School (2014), while acting as the head coach for the TYP Fastpitch Travel Team (2014). At Dalton, she helped lead the team to its first Elite Eight appearance in program history, while setting a school record for single-season batting average.
Dew finished her career at Western Kentucky as a two-time First Team All-Sun Belt Conference honoree and helped lead the Hilltoppers to the 2013 NCAA Regionals. A catcher at WKU, Dew set the program’s single-season triples record in 2011.
A 2013 graduate of Western Kentucky and a native of Calhoun, Ga., Dew earned a spot on the Sun Belt honor roll all four years.
