Sean Furey joined the Brown track & field coaching staff in December 2018 as a volunteer assistant with a primary goal of supporting program director Tim Springfield and coach Craig Kinsley in their mission to develop one of the most competitive throwing programs in the NCAA.
Furey is fresh off a 13-year post collegiate javelin throwing career, ending in 2017, that saw him compete in two Olympic Games (’12 , ’16), two IAAF World Championships (’09, ’15) and two Pan American Games (’11, ’15). Sean also competed in the USA national championships for 14 straight years, winning three times (’10, ’14, ’15). Furey spent 10 years training at the US Olympic training center in Chula Vista, Calif., where he was surrounded by some of the best throwing coaches and athletes from all over the world. Furey is beyond excited to share his experiences with the Brown athletes and help them to realize their true potential.

Furey was a two-time Academic All-American while at Dartmouth (’04, ’05) while studying engineering, and in 2005 was voted the USTFCCCA Scholar Athlete of the Year. He understands the challenges of competing at an institution that is top both academically and athletically and looks forward to helping the Brown athletes find the required balance. Furey currently lives in Barrington, R.I. with his wife and two children and works as a mechanical engineer at Raytheon Company.
