A former Ivy League student-athlete and an elite athlete, Melissa (Mel) Zammitti serves as a volunteer assistant coach with the Brown track and field and cross-country programs. Mel joined the Bears in February 2022, soon after she graduated from Cornell University in 2021 with a human development major.
As a sophomore, Mel placed fifth in the 1000m at the Indoor Ivy League Championship. She competed in the 2019 NCAA DI Northeast Region Championships to help her team qualify for the national championship during her junior year. She was also elected a cross country co-captain in the same year. Lastly, Mel was awarded the Middle-Distance Most Valuable Player as a senior.
At Brown, Mel works as a clinical research coordinator with the Alzheimer’s lab affiliated with Lifespan and Rhode Island Hospital. Her lab focuses on identifying the early markers of mild cognitive impairment in relation to Alzheimer’s disease. Mel plans to enroll in a clinical neuropsychology Ph.D. program in the near future.
Outside of research and volunteer coaching at Brown, Mel trains with the Rhode Island Track Club (RITC) under coach Kurt Benninger. She aspires to run in the Olympic 1500m.
