Former Siena head coach John Svec enters his sixth season with the Brown men's lacrosse program in 2024.
Brown finished the 2023 season with a 6-8 record and 2-4 Ivy League mark with three of those losses coming by a single goal. Five Bears, including First Team All-Ivy Matthew Gunty, picked up postseason Ivy League honors. Additionally, Gunty and Devon McLane picked up USILA Scholar All-American honors as the Bears posted another strong season in the classroom.
The 2022 campaign saw the Bears post a 10-5 overall record and capture a share of the Ivy League Regular Season Title. The Bears welcomed Cornell, Penn, and Yale to Stevenson-Pincince Field for the 2022 Ivy League Tournament. The Bears earned an at-large berth to the 2022 NCAA Tournament and were named the eighth-seed and earned the right to host Virginia in the NCAA First Round Game.
Svec was the head coach at Siena from 2012-2018 and a two-time MAAC Coach of the Year (2012, 2014). He guided the Saints to the program's third MAAC Championship in 2014.
Svec posted a 24-18 mark in MAAC play in seven seasons, leading the Saints to the MAAC Championship game in each of his first three years as well as a pair of regular season titles (2012, 2014). He was appointed to the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Rules Committee in July of 2014.

Svec guided the Saints to the program's third MAAC Championship in six seasons in 2014 and was named the MAAC Coach of the Year.
Siena posted an 11-6 overall record and an unblemished 6-0 mark in the MAAC. He guided the Saints to the NCAA Play-in Game where Siena dropped a hard fought 9-8 decision on the road against a Bryant squad that ultimately advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
In 2013 Svec led the Saints back to the MAAC Championship Game for a second consecutive season. Svec guided the Saints to the program's first-ever win over a USILA Top-10 opponent when Siena upset 10th ranked Albany, 10-9.
Svec came to Siena following a three-year stint as an assistant coach at Hobart College in the powerful ECAC Lacrosse League. During his tenure with the Statesmen, Svec coached six All-ECAC selections and two USILA North/South All-Stars. He served as defensive coordinator at Hobart, and his corps ranked 11th nationally in scoring defense in 2009.
Prior to his stint at Hobart, Svec had a proven track record in the Capital Region where he was one of the key architects to Albany's rise to power. He served as an assistant coach with the Great Danes from 2001-08, helping guide the program to a 70-43 (.619) record and four NCAA Tournament appearances.
A native of Arnold, Md., Svec earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Loyola College (Md.) in 2001. A defenseman for the Greyhounds, Svec participated in four consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Loyola posted an impressive 46-10 (.821) overall record during his playing career and advanced to the NCAA Final Four in 1998.
