JB Cholnoky joined the Brown men’s crew as an assistant coach of the varsity team in November of 2013 and enters his sixth season with the program in 2018-19.
In five seasons in Providence, Brown has reached the varsity grand finals of the IRA National Championship every year, highlighted by a runner-up finish in 2014. Cholnoky coached the third varsity to a gold medal at the 2014 Eastern Sprints and then a bronze medal at the 2014 IRA Championship. Most recently, Brown placed sixth overall at the 2018 National Championship and earned bronze medals in the varsity and second varsity boats at Eastern Sprints.
Cholnoky began his coaching career in 2008 at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Conn., where his junior varsity boats went undefeated for three years. During that time he helped produce a varsity boat that captured bronze at the Youth National Championship in the Men’s Four in 2009, silver in 2010, and a New England Championship in 2011.
While pursuing a major in American History at Dartmouth College, Cholnoky was a four-year member of the Men’s Varsity Heavyweight team, spending three of those seasons coxing the first varsity eight. He won the Richard Grossman award for leadership as a senior in 2008. Cholnoky went on to race competitively with the Palm Beach Rowing Association after college, winning the San Diego Crew Classic twice and taking silver at the Head of the Charles in 2009, 2010, and 2011.
He currently resides in Providence, R.I. and earned a Master’s in American History at Brown University in 2015.
