Graham Willoughby will be starting his ninth season as first assistant coach for Brown men’s crew in 2020-21, having arrived at College Hill in the fall of 2012 to coach the Brown crew freshman squad.
Originally hailing from Northern California, Coach Willoughby began his rowing career at Marin Rowing Association in 1993 as a sophomore in high school. Having taken up coaching junior rowers after college, Willoughby quickly became one of the top junior coaches in the country, coaching his teams to three National Championships as well as multiple victories at the Head of the Charles, including a course record. Coach Willoughby was also on the staff of the US Junior National Team for two years, and in the summer of 2012 coached the US Junior 8+ at the World Junior Rowing Championship in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. That fall, Brown head coach Paul Cooke called on Willoughby to head up the freshman program at Brown.
In his first season at Brown, the Freshman finished second in the US at the IRA National Championship, and third the following year. The Freshman won the Eastern Sprints Championship in 2014, and finished in the final round at the Henley Royal Regatta that same year. With freshman rowing discontinued in 2015, Coach Willoughby pivoted to first assistant coach, working with all the athletes on the team, as well as coordinating recruiting for the squad.
Coach Willoughby resides in Warwick, Rhode Island with his wife, a young son and their two dogs.
