Cross Country Opens 2026 Season at Friar Invitational

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – The Brown cross country programs both opened their 2026 seasons on Friday afternoon at the Friar XC Invitational at Highland Park. The meet featured six of the eight Ivy League schools, all of which will compete in the Ivy League Heps (hosted by Brown) on the same course in late October.
The Brown men placed fourth out of nine teams in their meet with 129 points, finishing behind Penn (27), Providence (53) and Dartmouth (121). The women's team finished in seventh place, where Providence (22), Princeton (52) and Penn (80) placed in the top three.
In the men's 6K race, the Bears were led by senior Sebastian Margetts who finished 13th overall out of 94 in 18:36.5. Freshman Luke Cushing (18:43.5) was next in 18th place overall, followed by freshman Marcus Adelman (24th/18:46.2), senior Matthew Doherty (41st/19:04.7) and sophomore Duncan Frisbie-Smith (45th/19:13.3). Kit Jackson and Luke Bodden rounded out Brown's top seven.
The women's program raced many underclassmen in Friday's 4.2 kilometer race, with freshman Anna Hastings leading the Bears' pack in 11th place overall out of 85 runners in 14:38.3. Fellow classmates Audrey Crowder (30th/15:01.0) and Cricket Phipps (36th/15:07.8) rounded out the top three, while junior Sanam Rangaraj (52nd/15:35.5) and senior Scarlet Stimson (56th/15:38.0) completed the team's scoring five. Junior Sarah Paul (16:08.5) and senior Julia Soderbury (16:12.5) completed the Bears' top seven.
The Bears will have a week off before their next competition on Saturday, September 19 at the Meribel Sanchez Souther Invitational, hosted by Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H.
