OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Brown freshman shortstop Matt Luigs has been named to the 2026 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Watch List. The award is presented annually by the College Baseball Foundation to college baseball's top shortstop.
Luigs is one of 100 players nationwide named to the watch list and one of three from the Ivy League. The full watch list is available here.
Luigs is off to a hot start to his collegiate career. Batting out of the leadoff spot, he has hit safely in each of his first six games, ranks second on the team with a .407 batting average and a .467 on-base percentage, and has team-highs with 11 hits and two doubles. On February 21, he delivered what proved to be the game-winning hit with a two-run single in the eighth inning against Indiana State.
Luigs and the Bears will return to action tomorrow (Saturday) with a doubleheader against Rhode Island at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium starting at 11:30 a.m. The same two teams will square off again at Murray Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m.
