MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA, MASS. – The 57th-ranked Brown women's tennis team (10-3) notched their 10th victory of the season, overpowering the Boston University Terriers (4-6) 6-1.
"Comprehensively, this was the best competitive effort this season for our team," Broadbent Family Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser said.
Dani Ben-Abraham and Hannah Shen began the match with a 6-4 win at the first line over Gabriella Mikaul and Nancy Liu. At the second line, Abigail Lee and Chloe Qin secured their seventh win of the spring season, 6-3, against Blanka DeMicheli and Rhea Rai. With the Bears securing the doubles point, the matches between Anne Yang and Ali Maguy versus Vasilisa Borisova and Madison Liu at the third line did not finish. The match between Bella Hu and Anne Moody versus Ellie Gyuro and Lauren Kettlewell at the fourth line also did not finish.
"Starting with doubles, we came out with clarity and aggressiveness that is necessary in the one-set doubles format, breaking early in each set and holding serve the entire time," Schmidhauser added.
Sari Woo opened singles play with a decisive 6-0, 6-3 win at the sixth line over Blanka DeMicheli. At the fourth line, Abigail Lee claimed her 16th win of the year by defeating Madison Liu, 6-0, 6-4. Ali Maguy logged her 16th victory this season with a third-line win over Ellie Gyuro. At the second line, Dani Ben-Abraham fell to Nancy Liu, 6-3, 6-4, awarding the Terriers their first point. Anne Yang stays undefeated in the spring after a tense 7-6(5), 6-4 victory at the fifth line against Vasilisa Borisova. Hannah Shen secured the final point at the first line, rallying from a 2-6 deficit in the opening set to take the second 6-4 and the third 6-2.
"With the doubles point under our belt, our players kept the momentum going in singles. Abbey and Sari quickly secured wins over their opponents, using their distinctive game styles to overwhelm their competition and give us a 3-0 lead. Ali and Annie were both facing big deficits in their first sets, but were able to turn the tide, make less unforced errors, and step up their aggressiveness to each take the first set and ultimately the match. Hannah battled hard in her three-set victory against an excellent opponent at line one. She lost the first set quickly, but bounced back with a better game plan in the second set and closed out her win with a flawless performance in the third set." Schmidhauser concluded.
