PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A strong season-opening showing on Sunday for the Brown gymnastics team has earned two Brown gymnasts weekly awards from the Gymnastics East Conference. Senior Liza Marcus has been selected as the GEC's Gymnast of the Week and freshman Rehna Saalinger has been tabbed the Newcomer of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Dating back to last season, Brown gymnasts have now won at least one weekly award for seven consecutive weeks.
Marcus turned in a trio of impressive routines in each of her events, starting with a first place showing on bars at 9.800, followed by a runner-up showing on beam at 9.825 (tying her career-high), and rounding the meet out with a 9.775 on floor to tie for sixth.
Saalinger delivered a standout performance in her first collegiate competition by taking home first place on beam with a score of 9.850.
Brown took home first place in Sunday's quad meet against RIC, Southern Connecticut State and Springfield, posting a score of 193.025, the highest in program history for a season opener.
The Bears will return to action this Sunday with a dual meet at Yale. Start time is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
