Field Hockey Defeats UMass Lowell 4-0 for Third Consecutive Win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown field hockey team (4-3, 1-1) picked up its third consecutive win with a 4-0 victory over UMass Lowell (4-5) on Sunday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field.
Lexi Pellegrino had a chance to find the back of the net for the fifth-straight game in the first two minutes of the contest, but her shot was turned by the UMass Lowell goalkeeper Veerle Mous.
Brown found the back of the net 5:51 into the first quarter off of a penalty corner opportunity. Lucy Adams' insertion found Mia Karine Myklebust, who laid the ball off to Kate Siedem as Siedem fired a shot that was deflected by Juliette Meijaard. Meijaard's deflection allowed the ball to trickle over the goal line to give the Bears a 1-0 advantage.Â
Following the goal by Meijaard, the Bears stayed on the attack, generating two more penalty corner opportunities and three more shots on target. Mous stopped the remainder of the Brown shots as the Bears took a 1-0 advantage into the second quarter, the Bears out-shot the River Hawks 7-0 in the first.
Brown put a stamp on the contest early in the second quarter with two goals in the opening 52 seconds. The Bears' first goal of the quarter came after 20 seconds on a rebound goal by Kiersten Smith. After a shot by Sadie Schultz hit the post with a shot, the ball found Smith's stick as she was able to put the ball in the back of the net.
Smith and Schultz weren't done as 32 seconds later Smith found Schultz alone with a wide open net as Schultz was able to score. It was Schultz's third-straight game with a goal as the Bears quickly had a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter.
Brown goalkeeper Ellie Parker made her first save of the game as Brown entered halftime with a 3-0 lead.
Brown out-shot UMass Lowell 6-0 in the third and generated three penalty corner chances while holding the River Hawks to one. The Bears were unable to find the back of the net in the third as Brown maintained its 3-0 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bears forced Veerle Mous to make three saves early in the fourth before scoring its fourth and final goal of the game with 13 seconds remaining. Smith netted her second of the game off of a counter attack opportunity, Smith's second goal was assisted by Frances Moriniere.
As a team, Brown launched 22 shots, it was the third-straight game with 20 or more shots. The Bears have out-scored their opponents 16-1Â during their three-game winning streak. Brown has also allowed just five shots on goal during the winning streak; they've recorded three shutouts in four games at Goldberger Family Field this season.
Brown will welcome Cornell on Friday, Sept. 3 at 3 p.m. before hosting Maine on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 12 p.m.
