Volleyball Drops First Match of Weekend in Three Sets

STORRS, Conn. – Brown volleyball dropped its first match of the weekend at Connecticut, losing in three sets, 27-25, 25-10, 25-19, to the host UConn on Friday (Sept. 19).

Mariia Sidorova finished the match with a team-high eight kills for Brown (3-4). Hannah Flannery was second on the team with seven, followed by six from Julia Kakkis. Kakkis also had 25 assists to guide the offense.

On defense, Jessie Golden and Sidorova were tied for the team-lead with nine digs. Sophia Wolfson finished with three blocks.

Connecticut (9-1) finished the night hitting .321 with Brown hitting just .146. The Huskies also had nine service aces to just two for the Bears.

Brown jumped out to an early 11-2 lead in set one and held a 20-14 lead before UConn went on a 9-3 run to tie the set at 23. Brown had set point at 25-24 after a kill by Ally Panzloff but three-straight points from UConn gave the Huskies the set.

An early 5-0 run by UConn made the score 11-4 in favor of the Huskies and the Bears could not claw back into the set, falling behind 2-0 in the match.

The third set went back-and-forth with Brown trailing 9-8 after a block by Wolfson and Flannery. UConn responded scoring six of the next seven points to jump ahead 15-9. Brown got to within three at 19-16 after a Flannery kill but that was the closest Brown would get.

The Bears will continue play at UConn with a match against Sacred Heart on Saturday (Sept. 20) with first serve set for 1 p.m.
