PROVIDENCE, R.I. - With the fall portion of their schedule slated to begin next month, the Brown men's crew program continues to not only add new athletes to the roster, but coaches as well. The Bears welcome Nick Peterson to the coaching staff for the 2025–26 season after spending time last year as an assistant coach for the Navy Midshipmen.
"I am thrilled to announce that Nick Peterson will join our coaching staff," said Men's Crew Norman W. Alpert '80 Head Coaching Chair Paul Cooke. "Nick brings a wealth of experience to Brown. His background is extensive both as an athlete and as a coach. He has a deep understanding about our sport and how to build teams," said Cooke. "Nick played an important role at the Naval Academy during a breakout season last spring. He will bring competitive fire to our team, he is highly motivated to develop athletes, and I'm very excited to work with him."
"I'm very excited to join the team at Brown," said Peterson. "I have a ton of respect for Paul and Rufus; they maintain a positive, highly competitive culture at the boathouse, and the guys clearly have fun and love to work hard."
Peterson was instrumental in preparing Navy's athletes for race day, working with them to improve their technique, mobility, and strength while continuously developing new training programs to help the athletes maintain their health throughout a physically demanding season. Nick also played a crucial role in recruiting.
Peterson comes to Brown as no stranger to Ivy League competition, having rowed for the Harvard Crimson from 1992 to 1995. While at Harvard, Peterson helped his crew secure a silver medal at the 1994 National Collegiate Rowing Championship and a fourth place finish in the Grand Final in the 1995 IRA National Championship.
In addition to his time in the Ivy League, Nick continues the trend of Brown crew coaches having international experience after rowing for the U.S. National Team and U.S. Olympic Team from 1998 to 2000. Peterson competed in the men's quadruple sculls in the 2000 Olympic Games, helping his crew finish seventh overall.
Nick spent some of his post-rowing days serving on the USRowing Board of Directors and its High Performance Committee from 2001 to 2005 and serving on the USOC Board of Directors from 2001 to 2004, as well as its Ethics Oversight Committee in 2001–2003. Peterson was also the Chair of the Governance Task Force for USRowing in 2004–2006 and 2014–2017.
