PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown sailing teams had an action-packed weekend competing in four events across the weekend. Highlights include Guthrie Braun and Sidney Moyer earning podium finishes in the New England Singlehanded Championships, and the women's team claiming the Regis Trophy.
Brown hosted the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) Open and Women's Singlehanded Championships last weekend (Sept. 12-13). Senior Guthrie Braun had a strong finish to the event, earning third place in the 31 boar fleet. Freshman William Baker and junior Martin Atilla rounded out the top ten, earning seventh and 10th respectively. The Bears were the only team to have three sailors finish within the top 10.
In the women's fleet, Brown saw four sailors make the top 10. Junior Sidney Moyer claimed third place while senior Katharine Doble finished fifth, senior Kaitlyn Hamilton earned seventh, and freshman Leila Pfrang capped off the event in eighth out of the 15 boat fleet. The Bears and Harvard Crimson each had two sailors finish in the top five.
Brown will await selection for nationals, which will occur mid-October. The ICSA Open and Women's Singlehanded National Championships will be held at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. from Nov. 7-9.
The women's sailing team earned the Regis Trophy at Harvard, marking their first win of the season. The Bears held a 13 point advantage over second-place Dartmouth in the 18 team event. Brown finished second in both the A and B Divisions.
The open team competed for the Hatch Brown Trophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, finishing sixth overall out of 18 teams. Junior Blake Behrens and senior Caroline Keffe-Jones had a strong third place finish in the A Division.
At the Mystic Lake Invitational at Tufts, Brown's top boats finished in second and third place in the 21 boat fleet.
