HO CHI MIHN CITY, Vietnam – It was a tremendous end to the summer for Gabriel Liem Thai of the Brown men's track and field team as the rising junior recently captured a national championship in his home country of Vietnam.
Thai was crowned the national champion in the pole vault at the Vietnam Senior National Championships after vaulting 4.70 meters to become the first member of his track and field club (First Ho Chi Minh City) to win a national championship in the event.
Thai's vault was 12 centimeters above the national indoor record of 4.60 meters but fell short of the outdoor national record of 4.92 meters.
In his first year on the Bears' roster last season, Thai set the fourth best heptathlon score (4,722) in program history at the 2025 Ivy League Indoor Heps.
