No. 8 Men's Crew Takes Fifth Place in the Grand Final at the 2025 IRA Championship

CAMDEN, N.J. - The Brown men's crew program secured a fifth place finish in the Grand Final of the V8 race at the 2025 IRA Championship on Sunday afternoon. This result marks the thirteenth time that Brown's top boat has placed in the top five at the IRA's since 2000. The 2V8 recorded the best finish of the day for the Bears, earning a fourth place finish in its Grand Final regatta. The 3V8 competed in and won the Petite Final, finishing the 2024-25 spring campaign sixth overall.
The Ten Eyck Trophy is awarded to the program with the most total points throughout the weekend, with the Bears finishing fourth in the standings with 238 points for the second time in the last four years (2022). Bruno has an incredible streak of finishing in the top ten of the Ten Eyck Trophy standings, extending their streak to eighteen years after this weekend. The last time the Bears didn't record a Ten Eyck top ten finish was 2005, just missing the cut at eleventh overall. Â
"The team really bounced back from the Eastern Sprints this week. Their team spirit and belief in each other was very strong and they didn't give up," said Men's Head Coaching Chair Paul Cooke '89. "Every crew beat their predicted finish in the seedings. The Varsity Four inspired everyone with a thrilling semi final."Â
The V8, stroked by David Person and coxed by Elenna Seguin, crossed the finish line in 5:34.550. As one of the top crews in the nation, the V8 outperformed its eighth overall ranking by the latest IRCA/IRAÂ poll coming into the weekend. With seven starters returning to the V8 next season, the Bears will be in a strong position to follow up this year's finish and continue to compete for a national championship.Â
"The Varsity had a thrilling semi final, qualifying for the Grand for the first time since 2022 and knocking out Yale," said Cooke. "Their fifth place finish in the final, ahead of Syracuse, put Brown in fourth place overall for the Ten Eyck standings. To finish in fourth in the country as a team says a lot about the courage, unity and commitment this team has shown all year."
The 2V8, stroked by Isaac Hillicks-Tulip and coxed by Lizzie Mitchell, posted a final time of 5:28.680, finishing just 1.380 seconds behind California (5:27.300) for the bronze medal. Senior leaders Mitchell, Skye Bacon, Marcus Winter, and Connor Prior helped the 2V8 achieve its best IRA finish since 2013. "The Second Varsity had a terrific 2nd 1000m to put themselves in the fight for medals, finishing ahead of the silver and bronze medalists from Sprints," said Cooke.Â
The 3V8, stroked by Gordy Gibbons and coxed by Jack Mershon, won the Petite Final with a final time of 5:36.100. This is the fourth consecutive season that the V8, 2V8, and 3V8 have all finished sixth or better at the IRA Championship. "The Third Varsity came back from a heartbreaking loss in the semi final to claim victory in the Petite Final, ahead of the bronze medalists from Sprints," said Cooke.Â
The Bears were one of four Ivy League programs to qualify for today's Grand Final, along with Harvard (second), Dartmouth (third), and Princeton (fourth). The Ivy League was also incredibly well represented at the top of the Ten Eyck standings, with Harvard (second), Brown (fourth), Princeton (fifth), Dartmouth (seventh), Yale (eighth), and Penn (tenth) all earning spots inside the top ten.Â
