4/18/2025 7:51:00 PM | Women's Crew
SARASOTA, Fla. - Brown women's crew finished the first day of competition at the Big Ten Invitational on Friday afternoon, with strong showings across the board.Â
The Bears had eight races on the day and recorded podium finishes in each one. Of their eight races, seven of them saw Brown finish in second place, with only one third place finish in the afternoon 2V4 race.Â
"There are some really fast crews at this event and it is an honor to get to compete against them," said Loyalty Chair for Women's Crew Head Coach Tessa Gobbo-Zimmerman '13. "Racing three times in two days is an exciting challenge. We plan to make each race faster than the one before and today is a good foundation for our last race tomorrow."Â
The V8 had two of the seven second place finishes on Friday, posting times of 6:24.118 in the first race and 6:20.440 in the second race. Stroked by Nadia Vondeling and coxed by Summer Balla-Kellett, Brown's top boat fought hard against third ranked Washington and ninth ranked Rutgers. With a four second improvement in their second race, the V8 is poised for a strong finish on Saturday morning.Â
The 2V8, stroked by Isla Wilding and coxed by Caitlyn Roddy, lost their first race by 1.3 seconds after posting a final time of 6:22.924. In the afternoon slate, the 2V8 again finished as the runner-up after crossing the finish line in 6:31.071.Â
The A4, stroked by Nicole Urquiaga and coxed by Brooke Halvorsen, also found themselves in a hotly contested first race. Finishing with a time of 7:09.437, they lost by only two second against ninth ranked Rutgers. In their second race, the A4 finished in second place after posting a time of 7:14.381.
The B4, stroked by Alessandra Tuttle and coxed by Katherine Mitchell, finished their morning race in second place after posting a time of 7:18.201. In the afternoon, the B4 finished in third place against third ranked Washington and 16th ranked Duke after recording a final time of 7:19.477. A photo finish was needed to determine whether the Bears or Duke finished in second place, with the Bears finishing .044 seconds behind the Blue Devils. Â
The Bears are back in action tomorrow at 9 a.m. in the second day of the Big Ten Invitational. All of the races will be streamed live on RHStv.com.
