PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's tennis team (9-7, 1-0 Ivy) upset the No. 59 Yale Bulldogs (9-7, 0-1 Ivy), 4-3 in their Ivy opener on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
"Today's match was the best competitive effort from our team this season. Every Brown player fought so hard until the bitter end. We have been improving every week as a team and working our way towards this moment," Broadbent Family Women's Tennis Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser said.
The Bears got off to a strong start, earning the doubles point over the Bulldogs. Seniors Lindsey Hofflander and Addison Ahlstrom posted a quick 6-2 win over Orly Ogilvy and Erin Ha in first doubles. Yale's Angela Huang and Julia Werdiger earned a win at the third line over senior Gabby Soliman and sophomore Hannah Shen, tying things up. Brown clinched the doubles point following sophomore Dani Ben-Abraham and first-year Bella Hu's win over Mirabelle Brettkelly and Shyla Aggarwal 7-6(4), at the second line.
"We set the tone of the match with our doubles play. Lindsey and Addie were relentless as they stayed committed to their aggressive gameplan. Bella and Dani kept competing the entire set, coming up big in their tie break win," Schmidhauser added.
Brown headed into singles action with the point advantage. The Bears and Bulldogs split the singles matches, earning three wins each. Soliman earned a straight win over Ogilvy at the first line, adding another point for the Bears (6-4, 6-3). Yale earned the next three wins at lines four, six, and two. Brown responded with a win at the third line from Ben-Abraham, tying the match at 3-3. The final point came down to Hu and Brettkelly at the fifth line. Hu prevailed in two sets, clinching the win for the Bears. Following today's win Hu has clinched four matches for Brown, proving her ability to come in clutch in tight situations.
"In singles, Gabby set the tone at line one. She completely overwhelmed her opponent with her pace and speed, and closed out her match with confidence. Yale responded well, but our players kept competing so hard on every court. Even though we lost three singles matches, I was proud of Sari, Annie and Hannah for their fight in their three-set losses. Dani played flawlessly in her win at line three, playing aggressively and very smart strategically, taking the match to 3-3. Bella Hu, who has been so clutch for us this season, continued to stay cool in critical moments and once again clinched the win for us decisively," said Schmidhauser.
