PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After a standout performance over the weekend at the Ivy Classic, Brown freshman Avery Walters has been selected as the GEC Newcomer of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Walters dazzled with career-highs on all three of her events, also earning All-Ivy honors on each. Starting off the meet on floor, she tied for fourth overall with a score of 9.850. On bars, she scored 9.750 to lead the team and tie for fourth overall. Rounding out the meet on beam, she tied for second overall at 9.875, helping the Bears set a new program beam record of 49.175.
Brown finished runner-up behind Penn at the annual championship showdown between the four Ivy League gymnastics schools, finishing with a season-high of 194.800, the sixth-best score in program history. Walters was one of six Brown gymnasts to earn All-Ivy honors, and the only one to win multiple.
This is the fourth weekly GEC award for a Bears' gymnast this season, following Specialist of the Week honors by Emily Ford (Feb. 19) and Julia Bedell (Jan. 15 and Feb. 12).
Brown will return home to the Pizzitola Sports Center this weekend to host Southern Connecticut State and Rhode Island College for a tri-meet this Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at BrownBears.com/tickets.
