Women's Hockey Falls to Union in ECAC Opening Round, 2-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's hockey's (14-13-3) season came to a close as the Bears fell 2-0 to No. 9 seed Union in the Opening Round of the ECAC Playoffs on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 22).
Brown outshot Union 35-25 and peppered Union's goalie Sophie Matsoukas with 24 shots in the first two periods but could not get the puck past the senior.
"We approached the game with a great deal of purpose and were prepared to execute," said head coach Melanie Ruzzi. "We threw everything at them offensively and sustained offense for long stretches but just couldn't break through. Credit to Union and their staff, they are a disciplined and well-coached team"
Union broke through early in the second period on the power play as a shot from up top was deflected past Rory Edwards.
Edwards did everything she could to keep the Bears in the game, making 24 saves, including a stop on a breakaway in the second period.
The Bears continued to have chances throughout the game, finishing the third period with 11 shots but an empty net goal by Union with 10 seconds on the clock sealed the game.
The loss ends the collegiate careers of seniors Anna Shelden, Abby Hancock, Paige Gross, Cameron Sikich and Jess Ciarrocchi.
"I personally owe a great deal to this senior class for their commitment to Brown Hockey, to driving this program forward and for accepting our staff despite not knowing we would be their coaches," said Ruzzi. "It will be a tough reality to not have practice to look forward to on Monday with this group of women but I am so thankful for four years with them."
