
Women's Water Polo Splits Two Games to Open Season at Bruno Classic

Providence, R.I. – Brown Women's Water Polo opened their season at home on Saturday, splitting the first day of the Bruno Classic 1-1. The Bears started the day strong with a 13-7 victory over Iona before falling to Indiana in a tight 15-16 finish.
Brown v. Iona (W, 13-7)
Brown struck early against Iona, collecting their first win of the season with a strong six-point win.. Standout performances from senior Claire Poissonier and sophomore Aubrie Anderson helped lead the Bears to victory, with the pair netting nearly half of the Bears' 13 points.
In the first quarter, Anderson, Claire Poissonier, and Sofia Holman found the net for Brown to secure the early lead over Iona. Poissonier went on to pick up two more goals in the second quarter alongside Ava Schoening and Samantha Kim with one goal each, extending Bruno's lead over Iona to 7-3 at the half.
Anderson scored twice more throughout the second half, tying Claire Poissonnier's first-half performance with three goals apiece. Two goals from Alexandra Love and one goal each for Allesandra D'Arcy and Cleo Washer extended Bruno's second-half total to six, bumping the Bears to their 13-7 finish over Iona to secure their first win of the 2025 season.
Brown v. Indiana (L, 15-16)
A last-second score by Indiana handed the Bears their first loss of the 2025 season.
Freshman Ava Schoening was first to get Brown on the board, followed by sophomore Hanna Tidrenzcel and freshman Samantha Kim with their first goals of the match. Sophomore Gabriella Montalvo also found the net for her first goal of the season. Schoening, Tidrenzcel, and Kim came back for one more each throughout the second quarter, while senior Claire Poissonier and junior Ella Palmer also picked up a goal apiece, bringing Brown within one point of Indiana's 10-9 lead at halftime.
The Bears continued to trail the Hoosiers throughout the third quarter, logging three goals scored by Aubrie Anderson, Hanna Tidrenzcel, and Sofia Holman to Indiana's four. The final period was the lowest-scoring yet closest competition of the match: junior Hana Homma sank her first goal of the game, followed by Samantha Kim picking up her third and fourth to tie the score 15-15. With less than three minutes to go, overtime looked certain, but a last-second goal by Indiana tipped the score in the Hoosier's favor for a heartbreaking final score of 16-15.
