PROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 11 Brown women's hockey (8-4-1) dropped its Mayor's Cup matchup with Providence (5-10-2) in a 3-2 overtime loss at Meehan Auditorium on Saturday (Nov. 29).
The game-winner for Providence was scored at 2:46 in overtime by Audrey Knapp during a scrum in front of Brown's goal. It was Knapp's second goal of the game.
The Bears jumped out early in the first after winning a faceoff in Providence's zone. Zoe Li had the puck in the corner and sent a pass to Olivia Fantino in the slot. Fantino's one-timer beat Hope Walinski glove-side to put the Bears up 1-0.
After a scoreless second period, Providence got on the board with Kiara Kraft sending a shot from the top of the circle over Anya Zupkofska's shoulder and off the bottom of the crossbar to tie the game.
Just over four minutes later, the Friars took the lead after the puck went off the endboards behind Brown's goal and found the tape of Knapp at the faceoff circle. Knapp beat Zupkofska under her glove to make it 2-1.
With nine minutes left in the game, Brown cleared the puck to center ice. Providence's defender misplayed the puck, leading to a Bears' breakaway. Fantino passed to Ava DeCoste who scored her first goal of the season to tie the game.
The Bears had another chance with Margot Norehad on a breakaway. Norehad beat Walinski but sent the puck off the pipe as the game remained 2-2.
Providence controlled most of overtime and after Zupkofska made a save on a rush, the puck ended up in front of Brown's net. Zupkofska was not able to cover the puck before Knapp flipped the puck into the back of the net.
