LEWISBURG, Penn. - The Brown women's basketball team (5-2) won its fifth-straight game after defeating Head Coach Monique LeBlanc's alma mater, Bucknell (3-4) 61-50, inside Sojka Pavilion on Friday afternoon. The Bears snapped the Bison's undefeated 2-0 home record.
Senior forward Alyssa Moreland led Brown with a commanding 16-point, 16-rebound performance securing the eighth double-double of her career, and fourth of the season. Moreland has reached double figures in points in six of seven games this season, including five straight. She has also posted double-digit rebounds in five contests, with Friday marking her second in a row. Moreland shot 64% from the field, and made both of the free-throws that she was awarded.
Senior guard Grace Arnolie followed behind with 13 points for the afternoon. With seven assists in today's contest, Arnolie now ranks 10th in program history in career assists, with 267. Arnolie also shot 43% from the field against the Bison.
The Bears had a strong start against the Bison, holding them to just six points in the first quarter. This marks the third time this season that Brown was able to keep its opponent in single digits in the opening 10 minutes (Bucknell, Maine, Boston University). Moreland opened up scoring for Brown with a layup at 8:57. The Bears continued to dominate, going on a 10-0 run midway through the quarter. Junior guard Olivia Young hit a three-pointer with just below a minute remaining in the quarter, securing the Bears' lead 17-6.
The second quarter played out similarly to the first, with Brown scoring another 17 points ahead of the break. The Bears went on a 9-0 run during the quarter, which was cut short by Bucknell's Isabella Casey with two minutes on the clock. Arnolie and Moreland each netted another basket before time expired, giving Brown a 34-17 lead at halftime.
A third quarter surge ultimately sealed the deal for Brown, proving to be its highest-scoring quarter of the contest. The Bears pushed to a 55-31 advantage after three quarters of play.
The final quarter proved to be the best for the Bison, scoring a game-high 19 points. It was the Bears' lowest-scoring quarter matching Bucknell's six point opening quarter.
With its win today, the Bears level its record out to 2-2 on the road.
