CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brown women's tennis team kicked off day one of the ITA Regionals, notching seven singles victories.
Three players earned spots in the main draw, joining teammates Dani Ben-Abraham, Sari Woo, and Anne Yang, who had previously qualified directly.
Anne Moody advanced to the second round by winning her opening match against Audrey Feng (Dartmouth) 6-4, 6-4, then was eliminated by Constance Levivier (Syracuse) 6-4, 6-2. Bella Hu dropped her first-round match to Anastasia Pettersson (URI) 1-6, 6-2, 6-2. She then entered the consolation bracket and defeated Angel Walia (Binghamton) 6-3, 6-1. Hannah Shen advanced through both rounds by beating Emma Baker (Cornell) 6-2, 6-3, and Amanda de Oliveira (UMass) 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Abigail Lee advanced by defeating Liliana Malinowski (Fairfield) 6-1, 6-0, and then Martina Pavissich (UMass) 6-4, 6-1. Francesca Saroli lost in her opening round to Chloe Lomas (UConn) 6-2, 6-2, and then won her consolation match against Annelise Beltran (Stonehill) 7-5, 6-0. Ali Maguy won her first-round match against Isabella Asenov (UConn) 6-2, 7-6 (4), and then shut out Camila Barrera Aguirre (Providence) 6-0, 6-0.
"Good day for the Bears in the qualifying rounds of ITA Regionals," commented Broadbent Family Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "In addition to the three players automatically in the main draw of singles, we qualified three additional players today. Abbey Lee executed her game efficiently and with purpose in both her matches, playing with variety and great touch at net. Hannah battled hard in both her matches, outcompeting her opponents with gritty play.
"In her first match, Ali, after winning the first set, had to overcome a 2-5 deficit in the second set and closed out the match decisively in the second-set tiebreaker. She played flawless tennis in her qualifying match, overcoming her opponent with power and accuracy."
Schmidhauser added, "Anne battled hard in both her matches and showed off her variety and all-court game. We start with doubles tomorrow before the singles main draw starts. The Bears have four teams in the main draw of doubles."
