PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Brown women's basketball team (8-9, 2-2 Ivy) earned their second conference win of the season 49-39, over the Cornell Big Red (4-13, 0-4 Ivy) on Monday at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Senior guard Isabella Mauricio joined the 1,000-point club after netting 18 points in Saturday's contest. Mauricio shot 50% from beyond the arc and went 6-10 in field goals.
"Obviously, I'm really fired up for Bella getting this accolade. She's really earned it over four years, and she's meant a ton to our program," Elizabeth F. Turner '98 Coaching Chair for Women's Basketball Monique LeBlanc said.
"I mean, it's a long time coming. It's cool to happen now when I have seen this team's growth, like going from two wins to where we are now and where we are going. It's cool to experience with this team," said Mauricio when asked to reflect on her 1,000 career points.
Junior forward Beth Nelson set a new career-high with four blocks against the Big Red.
Junior forward Alyssa Moreland continued to make her presence on the court known since her return. Moreland shot 50% at the free throw line, grabbed seven rebounds, and set a new season-high with six steals.
Really fired up for the team on this bounce-back win. We spent a lot of yesterday talking about how important it would be to have a defensive focus in this game, play together, and connect. I thought the team really dialed into that game plan and did a great job executing," LeBlanc said.
Mauricio set the standard for the Bears, hitting a three-pointer to get them on the board first. Brown held the lead by one at the halfway mark of the first quarter. A few layups and a pair of free throws pushed Cornell ahead at the end of the first 10.
The Bears posted 11 points in the second quarter, allowing them to take the lead before the break. They held the Big Red to just five points in the second quarter. Junior forward Beth Nelson hit a clutch three to knot things up at 14 each. First-year guard Gia Powell, junior forward Alyssa Moreland, and junior guard Grace Arnolie posted seven points to give Brown the advantage going into the break.
Cornell netted 12 points in the third quarter, catching up to Brown. The Big Red's Clarke Jackson hit a layup to give Cornell the lead as the clock expired.
Nelson opened up the fourth quarter with a layup, paving the way for the remainder of the game. The Bears scored the most points in the final quarter, with a total of 20. Young hit a clutch triple in the final quarter, extending the Bears' lead 39-33 over the Big Red. The final pair of points came from Mauricio at the free throw line. Netting both of the free throw opportunities, Mauricio earned her 1,000 career point. The Bears came out on top, rounding out the contest 49-39 over Cornell.
