Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams Finish Second in Opening Races

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – The Brown cross country programs began their 2024 campaign at the Friar Cross Country Invitational at Highland Park on Friday. The men's and women's teams took second place after each having runners in the top 10, respectively. Sophomore Sebastian Margetts led the men's side finishing sixth and junior Emily Mrakovcic led the women's side finishing third.
The Bears' squad was valiant in the men's 6K race, but Providence proved unstoppable. Providence led the team scoring with 18 points, while Brown finished second with 54. Rhode Island (72) and New Hampshire (79) filled out the last two spots.
In the men's race, Margetts finished in sixth with a time of 18:48.41, followed by senior Sam Colton who finished 10th with a time of 19:03.50. Luke Boddon (11th/19:03.79), Matthew Doherty (13th/19:06.15) and Justin Hickey (16th/19:12.63) all scored for the Bears. Jason Markopoulos, Colin Fisher, Tommy Gaffey, John Farrell, Kit Jackson, Brendan Leahey, Nick Strayer, Henry Wood and Matt Wing rounded out the rest of the team.
In the women's 4K race Providence was once again most dominant scoring 21 points. Brown finished second with 56, while New Hampshire (69) and Rhode Island (88) trailed behind.
Mrakovcic finished third overall with a time of 14:22.79 and sophomore Olivia Fraga (14:29.12) finished just behind her in fourth. Scarlet Stimson (10th/14:59.37), Lillian Kaelber (19th/15:45.74) and Veronica Ambrosionek (23rd/15:59.19) also scored points for the Bears. Sara Perez, Olivia Bergin, Olivia Takla, Julia Soderbery and Eve Siff-Scherr rounded out the ten Brown competitors.
The Bears will be back in action in two weeks as both teams will compete in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 21.
