Women's Rugby Opens Season with Hard-Fought Tie Against Quinnipiac

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (0-0-1) and Quinnipiac Bobcats (0-0-1) battled to a 17-17 tie in the 2024 season-opener at Berylson Family Fields on Saturday.
"While neither team is fully satisfied walking away with a tie, we were really happy with how physical and competitive our match was," said Rosalind Chou, the Kathleen Flores Women's Rugby Head Coach. "The resilience in a tight game is exactly what we need to see from the team to compete for a playoff spot. Quinnipiac is perennially a final four team, so it says a lot about our team to end in a draw.
"We've had two first-years step up immediately in the back line, Genie Dickens and Yona Allouche and many others who rolled off the bench to contribute."
After a scoreless start to the game, Quinnipiac took the lead 28 minutes into the opening half with a try and conversion to take a 7-0 lead over the Bears.
Kat Storey added another Quinnipiac try in the final minute of the first half to extend the Bobcat advantage to 12-0.
Brown's Yona Allouche touched down in the final seconds of the first half give Brown its first points of the season and cut into Quinnipiac's lead before the halftime break.
Nikki Lynch broke through the Bobcat defense for Brown's second try of the afternoon early in the second half. Julia Murray added the conversion to tie the game at 12-12.
Akilah Cathey gave the Bears its first lead of the afternoon with her first try of the season 55 minutes into the match.
