WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Brown Bear won the Petite Final and finished seventh overall with the 2V8 taking sixth and the 3V8 finishing fourth on the final day of racing at the 121st IRA Championship.
The Bears tallied 229 points to finish fifth as a team. Washington swept the three Grand Finals to win the Ten Eyck Team Trophy.
"It's been a strong season and I've really enjoyed working with this team," said Head Coach Paul Cooke '89. "They've faced a lot of challenges and have bounced back from setbacks and supported each other all along the way. Everyone on this team has made a great contribution.
"I'm grateful for the people who have worked so hard to help us perform at a high level. The Athletics Staff have been terrific. Assistant Coaches Rufus Biggs and Scott Cockle have been tremendous.
"The team finished fifth in overall points and the Second and Third Varsity both advanced above their seedling after Sprints. They've really fought hard. The Varsity raced hard and had the chance to get some redemption after a tough semifinal. They set a good example by keeping their heads up, staying focused and racing an aggressive race.
"This team has done a lot for our program and I'm grateful for their spirit, courage and unity. The team was recognized as the recipients of the Rusty Callow Award and the EARC Crew of the Year."
The Third Varsity 8 opened the morning with a fourth-place finish in the Grand Final after posting a time of 5:48.615. The Bears held off Ivy foes Dartmouth (5:48.972) and Harvard (5:51.682) for the top-half finish. Washington won the Final with a 3V8 time record of 5:39.028.
The 3V8 picked up 63 team points with the fourth-place finish.
The Second Varsity 8 finished sixth in the Grand Final with a time of 5:50.317, picking up 76 Ten Eyck Team points. Washington won its second Grand Final of the day with a time of 5:34.317.
The Varsity 8 jumped to an early lead and clocked a time of 5:32.694 to win the Petite Final and finish seventh overall. Brown maintained nearly a boat-length lead over Penn (5:35.417) and Northeastern (5:35.721).
