WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Brown's Second Varsity 8 and Third Varsity 8 crews advanced out of the semifinals to earn spots in tomorrow's Grand Finals. The Varsity 8 took fourth in the semifinal to advance to Sunday's Petite Final in the second day of racing on Mercer Lake on Saturday.
"The semifinal of the IRA is always a big day with intense competition," said Head Coach Paul Cooke '89. "It was great to see the Second and Third Varsity strep up and take spots in the Grand Final. The Varsity Four also has shown a lot of heart.
"For the Varsity to fall short in their semifinal race was a tough blow to everyone on the team and cheering us on. Sometimes sport teaches us hard lessons and perhaps we didn't handle the pressure of winning a Sprints Championship and then backing it up at the IRA.
"Nonetheless, this Varsity 8 has brought our program back to fighting for Championships. Despite being knocked out, they have shown they can compete for the big prize. This loss is a part of learning what it takes to perform at the highest level."
In a stacked semifinal, the Varsity 8 clocked a time of 5:33.652 to finish fourth. The Bears mounted a charge in the second half of the race but were unable to catch Washington (5:28.702), Princeton (5:29.145), or Yale (5:30.112).
The Bears race in tomorrow's Petite Final at 10:50 a.m. against Boston U., Dartmouth, Northeastern, Penn, and Stanford.
Brown's Second Varsity 8 jumped from fourth to second in the middle of the race and finished with a time of 5:42.239 to advance to tomorrow's Grand Final. Princeton paced the race with a time of 5:39.979 with Harvard picking up third with a time of 5:42.976.
The Bears race in tomorrow's Grand Final at 10:10 a.m. against Cal, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, and Washington.
Brown's Third Varsity 8 held off Dartmouth, Yale, and Syracuse to finish second and earn a spot in Sunday's Grand Final. The Bears clocked a time of 5:43.248 to finish ahead of the Big Green (5:44.991) and Bulldogs (5:47.221). Washington won the semi with a time of 5:40.471.
The Bears race in the Grand Final tomorrow at 9:40 a.m. against Cal, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, and Washington.
The Bruno Varsity 4 clocked a time of 6:25.976 to finish sixth in the Grand Final. Washington captured the gold with a time of 6:15.019 with Dartmouth (6:17.432) and FIT (6:19.146) taking silver and bronze, respectively.
