Men's Crew Posts Strong First Day at IRA Championship

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Brown Bears opened the 121st IRA Championships with a strong showing as all three crews advanced to Saturday's A/B Semifinal races. The Varsity 8 and Third Varsity 8 both won their respective heats with the 2V8 taking second to advance.
"It was a good team performance today," said Head Coach Paul Cooke '89. "All the boats qualified for the A/B semifinal and the 4+ made it through to the Grand Final. The energy throughout the team is good and the crews are focused on the task at hand."
Brown's Varsity 8 took control of the opening heat early and held nearly a boat-length lead over Penn and Northeastern across the line to finish first with a time of 5:37.691. The Quakers (5:39.321) and Huskies (5:39.941) advanced to the A/B Finals along with Brown with second and third place finishes, respectively.
The V8 races in the semifinal tomorrow at 8:10 a.m. against Boston U., Dartmouth, Princeton, Washington, and Yale.
The Second Varsity 8 clocked a time of 5:48.965 to finish second to Washington (5:45.259) in its morning heat. The Bears jumped ahead of third-place Northeastern (5:57.072) in the early stages of the race and pulled away from the Huskies as the race progressed.
The Bears race at 9:10 a.m. tomorrow morning in the semifinal against Cornell, Harvard, Northeastern, Princeton, and Syracuse.
The Third Varsity 8 closed out the morning heats with a wire-to-wire win over Princeton and Northeastern to comfortably advance to the A/B Semifinals. The Bears posted a time of 5:50.385 to finish ahead of the second-place Tigers (5:53.745) and third-place Huskies (5:56.622).
The Bears race in the semifinal at 9:50 a.m. tomorrow against Cornell, Dartmouth, Syracuse, Washington, and Yale.
Bruno's Varsity 4 took third among 10 crews in a Time Trial, clocking in at 6:09.993 to finish just behind Washington (6:06.858) and Cal (6:07.738) to advance to the afternoon semifinal.
In the afternoon semifinal, the Bears held tight with FIT throughout the race and held off Syracuse to finish second and earn a spot in tomorrow's A Final. Brown crossed the line in 6:18.340 to finish between first-place FIT (6:17.050) and the third-place Orange (6:19.107).
The Varsity 4 returns to the water in the Grand Final at 11:50 a.m. tomorrow against Cal, Colgate, Dartmouth, FIT, and Washington.
