PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown track and field program is saddened to learn of the passing of Nathan Elder '13, a former co-captain, school record holder and Ivy League champion for the Bears.
A sprinter originally from Quincy, Illinois, Elder was a member of the Ivy League championship winning 4x400m relay team (3:17.12) at the 2012 Heps. By winning the Ivy title in the event, he earned First team All-Ivy accolades. He was also a member of the 4x400m team that won bronze at the 2012 outdoor Heps (3:13.18), and the 2011 outdoor Heps (3:14.23).
The 2011 indoor Heps was an especially memorable meet for Elder. He finished fifth overall in the 500 meters with a personal-best time of 1:03.76, which ranked fourth all-time at Brown at the time and still ranks No. 7 on the school's record list. At the same meet, he was also a member of a school record in the 4x400m relay, running the second leg of the relay that set a new program record of 3:14.26 to finish in second place overall and earn each member of the team Second Team All-Ivy honors. That record, which he held with Samuel Howard '14, Ajani Brown '14, and John Spooney '14, remained the school benchmark for four seasons and still ranks sixth all-time.
Elder also still sits sixth on the school's DMR record list along with Brian Shidler '11, Anthony Schurz '12 and Matthew Duffy '12 for their 9:47.81 finish in 2010.
"Nate was one of the first people on the team I met as a freshman and was honored to serve as a co-captain for the 2013 men's track & field teams," former classmate and teammate Kenneth Thompson said. "Nate was a leader on the team long before he was a captain and a leader in the Brown community more broadly. He embraced the challenges that came with transitioning to life as an Ivy League student-athlete from Day one and did it effortlessly. To honor Nate's legacy I am setting my intentions to embrace that which Nate embodied: to smile more, to really listen to those I love and to lean into this community and my own village."
